i- j in 60 years red cross proves wonderful boon for canadians a birthday is a time for cele- ration it is also an occasion to look at the past examine the present and prepare for the future this yearjhe canadian red cross society is commemor ating its diamond jubilee sixty years of service fo people in canada and through the world its record of achievement is one of which every canadian can be justly proud although the red cross flag was first flown in 1885 during the kiel uprising in western canada i was not until 1909 that thec ited cro was passed by the- canadian parliament officially establishing the canadian red cross society s a corporate body after a somewhat slow start the sociey sprang into action when world war 1began in 1914 during the four years of war it never slackened the pace setat the beginning jchrough the society the canadian people contributed more than 35 mil lion dollars for relief of suff ering it shipped over 340000 cases of supplies overseas it established and maintained hos pitals in- england and france recreation huts and other facilit ies and two red cross ambul ance convoys as well as trucks for transporting red cross sup- lies in europe when the war ended the soc iety which came of age in time of war turned its attention to pro ding services to meet the needs pf canadians at home red cross outpost hospitals and nursing imtions were est ablished to provide services to residents in remote areas of canada where the nearest doct ors were sometimes hundreds of miles away as transportation facilities were improved betw- een rural and urban centres few er hospitals were built and the emphasis was placed on nurs ing stations leaving nurses free to serve a large territory the junior red cross was est ablished in 1922 with the ob jective of involving students trotsretementary- tocollegai in a constructive programme of health education community service and international under standing now known as cana dian red cross youth and other forms of disaster wherever and whenever it was needed in succeeding years the red corss disaster service has played an import ant role in both major and min or catastrophies through the years the society continued to expand both in terms of new services and volunteer members by 1939 some 374 branches in nine provinces had been established and a national headquarters was set up to coordinate the work pf the provincial divisions to day the canadian red cross society is composed of ten div isions one for each province and some 1000 branches when war broke out in 1939 the red cross while continuing its activities in canada once more answered the call to help relieve the suffering of service men and civilians on both sides of the conflict red cross hosp itals and ambulances were again provided along with medical teams when and wherever needed and canadian women contributed their time and energy in bedding and surgical dressings all made by hand for shipment overseas the canad ian red cross corps was formed for service at home and abroad the knowledge gained through the years of this second war was responsible for the establish ment of a national blood trans fusion service in 1947 through this service today all the blood and blood products now used in canadian hospitals are supplied at no charge to the patient over onemillion units of blood will be required by the red cross to meet the needs of can adian hospitals in 1969 concerned about the increas ing annual death toll by drown ing the red cross introduced a water safety service in 1945 through this service thousands of trained volunteers now teach people of all ages how to avoid accidents and the precautions to be taken when they are near on or in the water i other red cross programmes and services include veterans services womens work comm ittee homemaker service care in the home courses free sick room loan service to name but a few in addition the canadian red cross through its internat ional affiliations in the league of red cross societies which i now number 1 1 1 societies oper ates on a reunionoffamilles pro gram aimed at reuniting famil- i ies separated by war and civil
