lc ers home from janice carte to her parents mr and mrs ormie carter describing a tour which she is taking with karen kor- zack of glen williams and some english girl friends today has been a lovely day too very unorthodox for christmas day but almost as good we had late breakfast and while rita was getting the baby two morths reaily to go out we had a good discussion with su who has a great sense of humour and seems to know a lot about almost everythinj tben we went sight seeing to humayans tomb and flower garden we wanted to go to the roo but it was very crowded as today is a holiday so we bought food and went to a park for a picnic while we were la- ling in the sun listening to the music of three little boys play ing drums and harmonium an other little boy came along and treated us for a slight fee to a magic show he was a great trouper com plete with mongoose in one bag and snake in the other he pla yed little musical interludes on a fldte anil drum between magical tricks men on bikes rode by with many helium bal loons tied to their scats and tried to sell them to us there was o much colour about us in the saris and flowering shrubs balloons and brightly dressed children that it reallv was festive some of us went to watch a field hockey game for an hour or so and i picked a poinset tia off a bush ln honour of the day i wanted to go to church but they didnt know of an an glican one near by and i have no decent clothes to wear any way so thatll have to wait noon looking through the shops it was so frustrating to see so many beautiful things every where i wanted to buy al most everything i saw in a lot of the countries so far i havc- nt really liked a lot of the i crafts but here the brass- jware and materials silk scar- jvea and saris etc and jew ellery and kashmiri rugs and coats the workmanship here in india is much finer but i think ill wait until im sure of what places ill visit before buying things here in delhi i where thcyrp bound lo be a i little more expensive dec 29th 198 on friday sheila bought two sitars an historic occasion as that was the main reason she wanted to go to india we found a little shop on the sec ond floor of an old building in the bazaar there were bundles of huge pumpkin gourds hang ing to dry these are used for the base of the sitars they are beautiful instruments carv ed and laquered and inlaid with mosaic and very complicated to play because there arc 18 strings she will keep one her self and sell the other for at least 8 or 9 times the price once shes back in england a little old man was sitting there 1 making a harmonium and ano ther man working on sitars so we really felt as if we were where it was all happening i today we had another picnic with rita and su and sus 3 brothers and mr gupta and then had dinner with sus par ents it has been so pleasant i and relaxing for us here plus we have been able to see a fair amount of delhi without a great deal of trouble we saw a large hindu temple after the picnic thls afternoon in a lot of ways it was like a huge ara- j uscment park with gardens i in the back where children were playing on rides and on i swings and families walking to- i gethcr and taking pictures the j temple itself was rathergaudy i felt and not particularly awe- inspiring however in one z i part thce was a guru rcadng i from a holy book to a few lis- j tcnets this was spoiled a bit j by people wandering in and out i and around and taking pictures j well if i dont finish this soon youll never get it and youll think ive disappeared somewhere between lahore and delhi actually its so civilized and developed in this part of india that sometimes i have to remind myself that im in in dia mind you the shoes look comfortable with their chunky heels and broad toes its only by trying them on you discover that while giv ing us the most sensible reels in years the manufacturers have also given us the most un comfortable toes- right at the start of the shopping ordeal your vanity fakes a beating in order to get shoes lpng enough this years short vamps demand you take at least one size larger than us ual then comes the problem of accommodating your big toe especially to those elegantjy shallow toed models you can try on literally dozens of pairs wore finding shoes that dont make your toes hit the roof and you have to have a lot of perseverance to find such a treasure this spring most of us i fear will strike a com promise by taking a pair that almost fit- then trotting right down to the shoemakers with them as soon as we get home to have the toes lif tedand stre tched silly isnt it why do we do it this isnt the first time we gals itave worn uncomfortable footgear in the name of fashion by any means i remember when the needlepointed toes came in a few years ago i vowed id never be seen wear ing a pair of those winkle- pickers 1 held out for about year too until finally i felt so self conscious about my blunt toed shoes i succumbed and now of course just when im completely sold on a wat- ered down version of the nee- dlepxrinters they change the styles back again to a really extreme version of the roun- ded toes j spike heels were the fash- 1 ionhen i was a teenager the spikier the better teeter ing around on my first pair was a big thrill i stu think high beets do something for a wom an theyre flattering to foot ankle and legs and for some reason make us feel very j feminine another good thirrg about them was the way they made us feel when we took them off what a relief at the opposite end of the glamour pole are the over the j knee boots of todays mod teeny i boppers wpnder if theyre as uncomfortable as they look maybe irs jus another sad sign of shall we say i maturity when you start to equate comfort with style i realize that aside from such j obvious uncomfortable styling weve suffered through shoes i can never take into account the fact that no two feet on the face of the earth are exactly alike even when they belong to the same person there arer plenty of people like me for instance who would have trouble finding shoes to fit perfectly no matter what the style because one foot is a full size larg th the other december 26 another thing that was nice yesterday when i was get ting dressed for breakfast a little servant girl came in and brought me a flower garland to wear a christmas gift altho im sure she doesvt even know what christmas is today we went to the ncpal- ese embassy to apply fr visas for nepal unfortunately we can only get visas for the khat- mandu area whereas we wan ted to cross over the border at the extreme west of nepal and drive across to khatmandu anyway were lucky to be able to go and to have the fel lows along to look after us the boys would like to sell their land rover in nepal if they possibly can since rail tra vel is so cheap in india es pecially with student discounts we may fly from khatmandu to patra in india if its not expensive so we can see the himalayas from the air how ever we will have to check with the nepalese airlines in order to know how nruoh it costs budget over million for halton conservation an operating budget of more than one million dollars has been
