deeply shock ed about the sudden- change upward in their school- tax bill few things hurt more then a surprise attack ori the pocketbook- it seems however it is surprising and it seems to me disturb ing that so- far little concern has been expressed by par ents and others interested in the education of our present and future school generation concerning another aspect of this education 1 in 1944 following a history of clergytaught relig ious education the hon george drew premier and min ister of education provided a new policy whereby classroom teachers or the local dergy would give religious instruction in two weekly periods during the school day certain ex emptions were allowed parents who believed that religious education is part of the total educational development could find comfort in the reasoning that together with the home church and sunday school and the number of good christians teaching the upbringing of their children into christian citizens was safeguarded 2 by order of council january 27 the keiler mackay committee was appointed to study religious education in the public school which in later years hod become such a controversial issue since our society became more and more pluralistic ie of a diversified nature even in the basic philosophies of life this year the km commit tee submitted its report entitled religious information and moral development if one reads carefully the title itself speaks a clear language permit a few quotes religious faith is a personal commitment which can best be made in the home and in the place of worship and the committee concludes that the christian indoctrination to which if bel ieves children in public schools are subjected must be stop ped christian doctrines are not only inculcated by the pre sent course but it is implied that these truths are exclusive to christianity the committee advocates that religion be continued in the school curriculum as a subject for study since a gen eral knowledge of religion is necessary to form a welled ucated person it advocates a public school course really in comparative religions to provide the students with in sight into the various beliefs of the world in grades 1 1 and 12 the course would involve system atic and detailed study with the intention of providing knowledge about and insight into the bases of religious doctrines creeds liturgical practices and into the roots from which they have sprung wtio is going to teach such a course it seems to me that we will need a wholly new kind of teachers college or department at our university ads for such teachers should jun lines like this applicants must have graduated from the department of holy pardon i mean wholly objective studies of reli gion he should not be an adherent of any of the follow ing religions christian roman catholic protestant or eas tern orthodox jewish moslem buddhist shintoist or any of the newer religions present in our canadian society but an avowed agnostic in order to provide the necessary total objectivity demanded for this course one question when i am a convinced christian who not only believes that christ is the head usher of heaven for deceased souls but that in him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge colossians 23 through whom god created the world who upholds by his word of power hebrews 123 what must i do with respect to the educa tion of pur children and next time i would like to touch upon the moral developmenf part of the committees report api cditc canadas finest quality mbllm i l red or blue brand beef v boneless round r teaks 4r
