students obtaining aecondary education in french language next year the board however decided not tovbte on approving pay ment of transportation costs for french students in the george- town area until more informa tion is received a motion that the board pro vide some subsidy for trans portation costs for those stu dents unable to use the trans portation provided for george- town was also deferred placed ad the french language com- mittee recently placed an ad- tertisement in county news papers to determine the number of halton residents interested in sending their children to the new french language school in north york f the committee learned that 22 students were interested 19 of them coming from the george town area and depending on the board bearing transportation costs of the three students from 4 burlington two were prepared to pay for their own transpor tation trustess learned last week trustees were told the fee at the north york school will be around 600 to 800 per student for the 196970 school year trustees liberty pease and jim price both of oakville ex- pressed concern that the board was approving payment of costs and fees which were still in- definite las lawless pointed but the french language commit tee chaired hy acton trustee tom watson had earlier decid ed it would not be economically feasible to establish a french language school in halton coun ty at this stage spartim oakville trustee richard goodin spoke out against the committees recommendation to pay fees to the north york board callingt a move to wards separatism we keep talking about unity in this country he said i dont like this move towards separatism price also said he would have to vote against the motion be cause of a matter of principle why does the provincial go- i vernment always put boards of education in the hot seat he asked education boards are required by law to pay the costs of stu dents who have to go outside the boards area of jurisdiction to obtain education not provid ed by their own board pease also complained that the french language education problem is very much a crea ture of premier robarts and the provincial government and said the government
