trucjeaus squaring off aejainst a couple of agitators in vancouver gives us mixed feelings mixed feelings was defined by a tele vision comedian an what a man feels when lie sees his new cadillac going off a cliff with his worst enemy at the wheel our first impulse when we read that mr truheau has slapped one youth grab bed a derogatory sign from a girl and tore h up was good for you and this seems to have been a general reaction from the vast maonry of people today who are get ting heartily fed op with a small maority of illmannered brats who in the guise of free expression are making a nuisance of themselves whevwsver the occasion pres ents itself reflection however had us agreeing with others who maintain a politician must cjird himself for such things adopt an air of detachment and take it in his stride we admire mr trudeau for being hu man and showing it rut we cant condone him publicly letting his emotions get but of hand to- the point where he used physical violence no matter how ustfied he might be a prime minister is elected for his brain power not his physical prowess if he continues to use the tatter we may see the day when there will be pictures of a pron figure on a public platform when someone else got in the first blow wrrfle trudeaus reactions in public make good copy in the long run they do not enhance his status as a politician or a statesman we would not expect the mayor of georgetown to engage in a battle of words or fists with a heckler we should much more not expect our countrys leader to do so whats ihe reason r kief mjj commohieario credit doht bother mahihg your ehtres the trudeau incident pinpoints a ser ious flaw in todays society a creeping fungus which is as deadly to our way of life as the dutch elm disease has been for our beautiful trees the flaw is in a concept of selfex pression and permissive behaviour promo ted by adults which in its ultimate flower ing is going to create conditions as close to anarchy as the world has ever seen our universities aro infiltrated with a spirit of decay boards of governors who won t say no to radical students school pa pers apparently free to spew every form of garbage and radicalism on young minds officials who would turn over the choice of studies the hiring of professors the ad ministration of bui dings to immature fledg lings sensible solution decision of the school board to have a central pickup for high school studeits so that no one has to walk more than a mile and a half to school should solve what could have become a sticky situation in georgetown our town is such that it is too much to expect that every student should find his way to school on foot the decision to use kennedy school as a rally point is sen sible and one to which there should be few objections today when cost of education is be coming a crippling burden for taxpayers there should be economy wherever possn ble and transportation is one of the costly items our government has a powerful core of civil servavts who have imposed lieir permissive views on the education depart ments which are merrily dropping discipline methods which have evolved through the years some parents are genuinely fooled into thfnkmg these leaders must be right because they are in such high positions some are going along not wanting to be branded as old fashioned some are re treating like the ostrich with head in the sand hoping that by not looking it will all go away we are in a frightening world and un less seisible adults are prepared to do their ob as parents say no when neces sary guide children with their own exper lence try to imbue them with the virtues of courtesy kindnes respect morals then we have no way togo but down apparently our scool boards and of i cials have not taken this into account how ever with promotion of senior public schools fo which large percentages of pup lis must be bussed senior public schools may have an ad vantage in supplying more specialized tea- cnmg but they have disadvantages at well segregation of pupils into narrow age groups can be bad from many angles a destruction of school spirit discipline prob lems arvd the above mentioned cost of transportation what was really wrong wrth our old system will the new turn out any better equipped adults thn those that cjiapel street has been churning out for the past hundred years old district school now fine nest for bird man gerrard jansen moved into a 146 year old country school house because he knew it was juit the right place for his wife and his two children and his rare australian red rump par rot the old schoolhouse property is ringed with pines and other big trees and jansen knew his silver pheasant from china and bin african doves and his 40 other exotic birds would like it toe jansen 38 bought the little old red schoolhouse in february for 14900 he was slightly dis miyed at the renovation needed to make th edilanrl i sin lr roojn building suitable to live in built in 1mj the schoolhouse b itood on derry road east near the ninth line since 1823 and was a little worse for wear oh boy ill never get fin iahed with this the dutch im migrant said as he set about the job did all the elec trical wiring for the place built and insulated a nw ceiling and in two morths had ihe old school looking like a ritzy apart ment inside ball tower the old mccurdy public school hasn t changed from the outside with its red bricks and bell tower no bell anymore but in side it looks like any other modern home going from the outside to ihe inside is like stepping through time many of the former pupils have visited the janseru since they moved in and been amazed at the transformation inside jansen s neighbour evclvn lee has been associated with the little red schoolhouse in the past and roled thai all the old timers living in this area went to the school it has a jot of memories she said she wrote a poem about the school fading into the an nals of time schooldays there may be over but the school still stands beau lifted by the talent of gerrard jansen the old oakville education board quit using it as a school when the percy merry school was opened in drumqmn several miles west it was used for a short time by the town recreat ion commission but then it fell into the hands of kronas real estate of oakville where tales man frank eckhardt sold it to fellow dutchman jansen the two men have been firm friends ever since half acre lot with the 14000 purchase price and the 4000 spent reno vating it the jansens have got a country home on a half acre lot for a lot less than they would have to pay for a conveni tlonal property in oakville i plans to itng his property with birdhouses papular hobby 1 birds are an important part of jansens life hes had birds since he was a kid in holland where keeping birds is extreme ly popular wherever i went i always had birds ha noted when he came le canada in 1b37 and lived in the okanagan valley b c he had birds he worked in a sawmill at the time and in his streetsville home be fore mnnng into the school house he had birds he has imported birds from various countries in the world and is currently waiting for hi importers licence to be renewed by ottawa bird bank i his streetsville home was re striding for his birds he cer tainly had no chance to make a bird park there but out in the country on the outskirts of rur al oakville amidst the trees and the open spaces a bird park will be created and jansen hopes lots of children will come and see his birds his own two children are johnnie 3 and jeffrey 1 his australian parrots the red rump is worth 60 and his asian pheasants and songbirds would be educational and enrich the lues of children as thm have enriched his own he said jansen a peaceful man lis tened to one of his songbird boy can he sing he said with genuine affection and pride celebrities to appear in cne cancer booth women celebrities from the i entertainment sporting and pol i icsl world will be like being pregnant you can t stop just because you re not in the mood the typesetters are waiting the ed tors are waiting and the maif man waits for no man ive written them in hotel rooms on trains and on new years morning ive written them ttith the raging flu the galloping bursitis ano a head that felt more like a foot and that explains why im tapping this out on grandads dining room table on a beautiful hot summer afternoon when any aane parson who was on his hslidoys would be at the beach or lying under a tree why didnt i do it yesterday because yesterday was a beaut iful hot summer day and i fell asleep on a raft out in the lake and my sillv wife on shore was afraid id fall off and drown and she sent some nit out to wake me and i was so mad at her presumption she knows i could swim that lake with both handa tied behind me that i wasn t in the mood for anything but a good domestic hassle after a month of relatives and friends and casuals drop ping in we were looking for ward to a week of quiet living and retting away from peo pie at grandads its an idjl lie setting a stone farmhouse overlooking a beautiful bav lots of trees around and the nearest neighbour a quarter mile down the road trouble is it s in our old stamping ground even though we slip in undpr cover of dark ness somebody spots us and the tom toms start drumming the smilevs are here then it s when are you go ing to drop out to the lake and c nme on up to the cot tage for a few days and how about dropping around for s drink and a barbeque it a grand to be wanted and all the old friends are so kind and hospitable that its diffic cult to a v no so we dont but it is definitely not conducive to the quiet meditative life murdoch the farmer and don the car dealer and george the millionaire its rude to rush off with my milk when these hard working chaps insist on one more round for old times sake just to add to the pastoral peace of our week we brought pip the kitten and grandad is in temporary charge of screwy louie a spirited young poodle however it wasnt all bad perhaps the highlight for me j was a trip around the mail with grandad uho has been delivering rural mail for 40 years since the days of the model t in summer and the sleigh in winter ever drive a route with i rural mail carrier it a an ex perience somewhat like your first ride on a big rollercoast r he belts around those grav ei back roads at a hell of a clip knows every rib and vein in them and takes corners and hills with the dash of a hell driver each moll box is a personal challenge he heads straight for the ditch and you cringe misses th ditch by two inches and winds up right beside th box so that th mall can b popfmd in without leaving th car add to this the fact that grandad has one arm and that 1 m a coward in a car and you gt the message must do it agsin some time in about ten years after this peaceful week weve determined to rent a trailer and go off into the bush somewhere with no tele phones no friend and just squat here licking our uounds with our luck the people in the next trailer will be our next door neighbours back home jansen envisages his place as more than a home however he hopes to mske it into a bird park and open up his grounds to the public he veuld have birds from all over the world and birds from canada and children could come to his bird park and lqok at his birds andjearn all about them we could have a nice bird park here if we get the coop eration of the town said jan sen with the pine trees th birds like it here currently the birdman of rur al hornby has three aviaries but the cancer society has pre pared special pamphlets to be handed out which discuss the two sites of cancer common to women breast and cervix for men who visit the booth the volunteers will have a
