sponsored this year by the have received national sports recognition through individual achievement but rather to put the emphasis on local sports men and women as was the case last year a number of merit certificates will be handed out to those who have been actively engaged in oakville minor baseball hockey e organization of local sports and lacrosse associations the activity dinner and dance survival and ground search course at edmonton- below is 4jthe report of his experience this is another example of the efforts the branch pu into providing training in good cit izenship for young canadians quo vadis nursing grad joinspeel hospital staff mrs hans nferstrasz of ter ra coxta is a member of the graduating class of quo vadis school of nursing and will graduate this saturday the school operated in con junction with queensway hos pita trains women in the 30 to 50 age group in a two year crash course leading to their registered nursing certificate she has taken a position with feel memorial hospital bramp ton where she will be work ing in the nursery of a class of 42 thirtysix women finished the two year course and will be graduating saturday at a ceremony in central technical collegiate in the city a native of amsterdam hol land she lived in laren be fore her marriage to mr nier- strasz who comes from nym- egen- they came to canada in 1960 lived in montreal for three years and have been in terra cotta since 1b63 their 11 year old son oscar has hern attending glen williams public school and now will be enina to stewarttown senior school 3 left georgetown on train to begin my trip across canada i arrived in i ballevllle and proceeded to trenton where i was quartered with the other cadets taking this course we all left monday on service flight 2 from trent on to edmonton the flight was iit a yukon aircraft more cad ets joined us in winnipeg and six hours later we arrived in edmonton all the cadets were pat in a barrack block along with the french speaking cadets who had arrived earlier for our lay at cfb namo tuesday the course began ifjt were transported by bus from the mess hall to the sur vival training school where we heard lectures films and saw demonstrations on survival and ground search all our even- ings were free to do what we pleased friday we were fitted fbt everything from clothes to knives and hatchets saturday morning we left on a two hundred mile trip to i jarvis lake in the foothills of the rockies in hinton we ate i our last good meal and once j in the bush we were divided in to two camps i was in camp no 2 we all slept in para teepees and were issued com bat rations two boxes for three days here we were taught how to make shelters fish nets and haw to make and set snares i arid how to organize and carry out a ground search we were also taught the practical basics of survival at the junior forest rangers camp we were put through the rough obstacle course it was lots of fun the next day we went deep er into the foothills and it rain ed the whole time the temper ature was around 40 degrees a are was the only thing we had to keep ourselves warm two dlys later we broke camp and returned to the stake truck and our camp set off on a hike ar ound the area we ate a lunch of hairroots and labrador tea and then began our trip back to base camp we had a written exam in which i got 92 there was an exercise in compass works and navigation a cross country hike and then we re turned to cfb namo i arrived back in georgetown on wednes day to end an exciting and most enjoyable trip out west back at the branch every thing appears to be ship shape as the vacation period draws to a close september will be a very ac- ttye month for several chair men and for members who wish oi participate 7th of sept is corn
