holy cross roman catholic church have you ever tried to step into a rowboat and have the thing move away on you while you still had one foot on the dock the resulting feeling of helplessness is a good il lustration of- what is happening to a large section pf flur soc iety we hear alot about the problems of youth there is also a growing concern with the problems of the aged but what about the middle group youth is oriented to building a future which seems far from secure the aged living largely from the past have to cope with a lack of security obviously both young and old have their problems only the middle group seems to sit securely in thesaddle reasonably successful in material things confidently in control yet this is the group that is most wracked by doubt and uncertainty although they may be the last to admit it on the level of social political and religious values these people experience the real meaning of doubt they are old enough to have a past a history and young en ough to have to look to the future especially if they have growing childrenj it used to be that the transition from pasjj to future from youthtoadulthoodtooldage was smooth er and more predictable not so today the development of the last two decades on every level is such that we can no longer speak of evolution we must use the term revolution the result is that persons in the middle group are for ced to straddle the gap between past and future and some times get the feeling of being wrehched in the process it is easy for youth to reject values and convictions of the past having little history they have not consciously lived these values for very long but for an omer person they ore part of his history and hence of himself with weekly coupon and purchase of 500 or more- plus 50 savings on frames chin pm to question these values is to question the person and what he stands for to be caught in this precarious position and to be exposed to the merciless criticism of the young is painful if conflicts stayed on the theoretical level they could be shrugged off but within the family hvrngorht such criti cism can cause deep hurt apd frustration because it is be ing levelled by those for whom the parents have laboured and sacrificed in the face of it parents can take refuge in the past and by outshouting their own doubts and misgivings can reassert themselves by authoritarian rule or they can go modern by giving in and abdicating all responsible guid ance it is evident that the dilemma of the middle group is most painful in the family the generation gap doesnt lie between the young and the older generation but it runs through the heart and and mind of the older generation there is no ready solution for solving this dilemma only the beginnings of solutions in certain attitudes the first of these would certainly be an open mind to acknow ledge ones situation and that of others and to be able to really listen a second helpful attitude is to reali2e that the mentality and the way of doing things of the forties cannot be imposed on 1969 centuries have passed since then on the other hand 1969 is not better than 1940 dif ferent yes in terms of values and convictions the young of 1969 are no better or worse than the young of 1940 they are different and because of the intervening revolution perhaps very different to serenely accept this basic fact is at least a first step awards a mutual trust in each others differences christ says in my fathers house there are many mansions with a slight twist this could read before god there are many ways of being a human being you printed from kauierlne cordardo in last weeks issue of the herald she was complal ning about the unavailability o doctors when she needed them as receptionist for a group of doctors in brampton i think i can speak for most doctor and their secretaries when i say the public does not realize how much their work involves and how much it has changed since the timj when the local doctor met his patient at the train and stayed with her until the baby was born have people ever stopped to think that there has been a population ex plosion in the past 40 years and that is what birth control is all about bach of the doctors t work for must have at least 2000 patients each and this does not leave them time to stay with each patient any length of tune i burn every time i hear peop le complaining that doctors arent like in the good old days when they would stop and chat with you of course notl they usually have another pa tient further across town who is calling his secretary asking why the doctor isnt there yet he called him hours ago how ever the doctor in that time has probably dona major surg ery hospital rounds perhaps an emergency case that tied him up and several other cslli prior to this he may have been up half the night with a patient about to deliver or calls from people who call because they cant sleep i have seen days when one or more of our doctors have seen 70 patients each in a day in the office alone by the time they are finished they are lucky if they can think straight and in no mood to see patients who call at 10 or 11 oclock at night to say their child has been running a fever for two or three days and must be seen right sway naturally they couldnt call during the day and these are usually the ones who complain about not being able to get a doctor anyone who ca our office and is in need of medical at tention ia either seen by one of our doctors or is referred trf someone who can see him i would not and could not turn down someone ill or in urgent need of medical help as any thing i do reflects on my em ployers some problems we know from previous experience can be left until the nearest appointment available although it may seem urgent to the pat ient in the case of obviously healthy pregnant women- being seen before others most of these and other routine ap pointments have been made far ahead and unless there is some one very sick who needs to be seen first it seems only fain ine cordaros predicament that they be seen as close to their appointment time as pos sible most of the patients who insist on being seen right away or want a house call in the middle of office hours are the first to complain if they have to wait in the office because offlot easier an emergency -v- or why she couldnt get help in georgetown nor is this letter against her but i felt the public should hear the other side be fore they judge i hope you will print this letter it may make my work and many others a wilson one of the are many patients that call for sniffles or cidc riirfaij minor ailments just because rl burlmu they know its covered by inm i imci ut surance in usual circumstances they probably wouldnt bother jtf conference to call a doctor if they had to pay this might ba the reason halton the first county in some doctors have refused to ontario to organize a county- accept he omsip payment as wide fire prevention bureau payment in full in the hope in full in that if they have to pay a lit tle extra themselves patients will think before they call as to payment of bills most doctors i think ours at least are quite fair about payment as long as they know the pat ient is trying to pay even if it is only 50c a week they ill accept this what other rrrdi tor would do this especially on perhaps a 100 account too many people forget ttiati a doctor like themselves needs food sleep and relaxation he is not a computer he is a living human being who can if over- worked run himself into the ground like anyone else he can not cither if he is to practice modern medicine with modern equipment staff drug etc give his services for nothing most television repairmen prob ably charge as much or more to fix
