tcwoau3r2 clergy comment y juvi w r calms ef it pauls baptist churtfc mi 0 a big st of tl hi it r h vi a e i t the many attractive endofseason bargains that cprtfronf os jn almost everystore and every newspper at this time of the year cauie me to ref let if you will pardon a per sonal reference on a conversation which yhad with a gen tleman some few years ago when was ministering in bir mingham england it so happened that i was the guest preacher in this mans- church oh that particular sunday after the service he thanked me most exuberantly for the address i gave hutlthen twith the sting in the tail he continued but vny dont youclergy sometimes preach 6ir what the church offers as you can imagine i thought of my friends remark and although he may perhaps never know it i took hrm up en hli challenge and lata preached a series of sermons in my church in birmingham under the title that heads this article can it be that some reader of these lines is asking himself a similar question is it beyond the realms of pos sibility that some of you are confused and bewildered is it too much to assume many are asking themselves in these days of unrest and turmoil whar the message of the chris tian church is in such critical times what does the church offer to the man in the strefetfrlf i could be assured that some of my readers- era asking themselves such pertinent and thoughtful questions then like my ministerial col leagues i could give a variety of answers to their quest when we turn to the pages of the new testament we discover that jesus offered himself and still offers him self in ths twentieth century es a personal friend and the church of jesus christ is failing miserably in its god- given task unless it is engaged in this unparalleled mission we do not offer a dead christ we do not offer a cruc ifix we do not offer a god remote and alienated from our cares and problems we offer god as a living ever- present friend one who rakes a deep personal interest in each of us the early disciples were energized and invig orated and their whole outlook on hfs radically transfor med when they discerned that jesus was god available and approachable no we wr ifwe put that last sentence in the past tense jeus is god available and approachable the great contemporary of every age and generation and his words spoken to human- hearts two thousand years aqp to hearts that knew bitterness and sorrow to hearts that the anguish of despair remain the same today ye are my friends if ye do whatsover i command you inevitably many will remain sceptical when the church proclaims this message doubtless there are scoffers and un believers abroad in our dey and generation just as they wal ked the streets in christs day but to all such we would point to the cross and proclaim here is the proof that a lov ing god is offering himself as a personal friend and sav iour tfti ojonorrewn hhald thumday oct u int paces mm msm ft iitz m mxaasm famous ftrt masterpieces hif wtokktloa activities for all ages everyone is welcome to the question what is involved in human friend ship that is worth the name someone has given the fol lowing answer human friendship is an indefinable trust in one another a constant communication between two minds an unremitting anxiety for each others welfare the friendship of christ involves that cant you see then why we unashamedly assert that christianity makes a big offer can you see what you are missing if you have not as yet responded to christs offer of friendship james g small who lived in the 1800s summed all we have tried to say in a lovely hymn ive found a friend oh such a friend so kind and true and tender so wise a counsellor and guide so mighty a defender i from him who loves me no so well what power my soul can sever shall
