director liz catling chatting with mary biehn ft when we stepped out into the station at los an geles after an allday trip from san francisco i was im pressed- it looked more like the lobby of a luxury hotel with shining marble floors and col umns than a railway station and when wc walked thru a courtyard filled with flowers and palm trees to reach the street and the bus which was to take us to our hotel i was even more so i have to admit that this is the way id imagined all of california would look ra- ther than the vast stretches of i near desert we had travelled thru i en route to our hotel uc had to buck the much maligned losj angeles traffic tun honestly it didnt seem any worse than j what we see every day on our i own highway 401 the los anj getes skyline isnt filled with tall buildings only a few because of the earthquake me nace and our guide was hard put lo find a downtown core of the city to point out to us apparently los angeles has de veloped in such a way that it is made up of districts which more or less have their own entity because of this sprawl workers in los angeles have a real transportation problem distance wise and traffic wise a car is almost a necessi ty for all adults e when we wakened on our first morning there it was misty or was it smoggy anyway by about midmoming whatever it was had dissipated into a light haze which remained for the rest of the day by night even al lowing for my normal eye strain after a day of sightsee ing i knew that something more had irritated them when i woke during the night with what i thought was a sore the house for a sick spell however by the time i had had coffee the next morning i was ok and by this time i realized that the previous day had indeed been smoggy not foggy f but the smog didnt prevent me from thoroughly enjoying the days sightsee ing were both great movie fans so the trip through uni versal studios was fascinating all those sets simulating streets in now york mexico spain india england france and italy to name only a few plus frontier towns and recrea tions of cliffs mountains val leys and lakes amazed us in addition to the sets there must have been literally hundreds of thousands of props wc rode all over the several acre studio lot on a miniature openair bus with a guide pretty young girl was she waiting to be discover ed to tell us everything of interest including a demonstra tion of the way special effects weather time of day a scary car chase etc arc made after seeing it all i have a new respect for anyone who can act well under such condi tions i cant see how actors ever get the feel of a part or what they are doing a moving picture is done in such small fragments often completely out of sequence with take af- er take after take not only that but the actors are physic ally uncomfortable under such strong lights that the tempera ture often soars to over the 90 mark and then they must also be uncomfortable mentally with umpteen camera light and sound technicians practic ally breathing down their necks ax they emote dont know whyv but i kept thinking of poor marilyn monroe when wc toured those sets given her inferiority complex about her acting ability no wonder she panicked when she made a mo vie the trip was a revelation it was a revelation in anoth er respect too if it hadnt been for the tours of the studio j the place would have been practically descried they hacl just finished making a picture and the only work in progress while wc were thore was the filming of the virginian tv serials and features are their mainstay now and the great majority of movies arc made on location often in europe how their world has changed rut the glamour of the mo vies still lingers for us so we got a kick out of trar tour of beverley hills where many of the stars have their homes the area is beautiful but not any more so than the forest ii ill village area in toronto o between stints ot sightseeing we had lunch in a uniquo place the farmers market its easy to see how jlgot its name but the market has evolved into a very sophisticated version i woull say calling it the gour mets market would hit the mark better in a long low building they display and sell the very choicest fruit vege tables meal baked goods and other delicacies in addition there- is a large section fil led with scrupulously clean food booths specializing in every different ethnic food you can think of plus segfood and more ordinary fare you can treat yourself to a gourmets feast or snack and sit down with it at one of the hundreds of tables scattered around it is oil very informal and gay for some reason our sight seeing program for the next day uidilt appeal to uiall that much knotts berry farm and disneyland just didnt seem our cup of tea how wrong could we be ft knotts berry farm allowed us the pleasure of a giant step backward in time recreating as it does an old west frontier town perfect in every detail it also recrea tes the heroic exploits of the pioneers who came west to california in stage coaches this we could really appreciate af ter having seen from our train windows the parched deserts and mountain they had strug gled thru we thoroughly en joyed wandering around the town streets and peeking in the windows of the homes school churches saloon sto res jail and even a gold mine where lifesize figures could be seen going about their daily chores as they did a cen tury ago after thus wed certainly be disappointed by disneyland ft wrong againi i couldnt attempt to describe it to you except to say it is a work of art colourful gay clean and beautiful to look at from the outside and inside the amusements or exhibits the genius of disney is so absolute ly delightful that at the end of five hours there i was
