as some 1 vf you know i have been a reader of the herald since 1914 and am impressed with the changes in georgetown since i first became a resident there which was the birthplace of tny late husband sincerely mrs cb catherine dayfoot martrtimilrtrtimmim length of your arm in it- this is after forking over a small ransoji there is a great sense dissatisfaction decorations in thoje days were simple inexpensive but just right strings of red r er bells venerable but ch ry strings of red and green curled crepe paper all over the house the tree itself had icicles and some colored balls a jew weal thy people r 1 colored lights on top was a homemade angrl today on decorations alone some people pend what would have fed a fc lily in those days for two month fancy candles storebought wreaths of ersatz holly colored lights eery- wherejnside and out trees that are almost hidden from the na ked eye by festoons of fribbe buying gifts in- those days was simple compared to the frenetic business it is today there was scarcely any money then and everybody needed something so it was long un derwear or a bandknit sweater socks or gloves maybe a few real luxuries like a 59cent gamo of snakes and ladders or a book ten dollars didnt go far even then today joplc almost go ar ound the bend trying to find something f other pcopie who have evci thing or can buy it nobody makes a ift- they buy them they havent time because of the christmas rush clothes that dont fit eightdollar toys that last fi e minutes a hundred dollar worth of ski equipment that isnt the right kind christmas eve then was car ols around the piano mother stuffing the turkey kids to bed arly quivering with excitement stocking stuffing time tee the adults a quiet chat with a little despair that there wasnt money for skates and new win- tar coats and things like that today its frantic lastminuto shopping and wrapping of gifts entertaining peoole who have i managed to finish their rat- i race we got to bed at 4 am- 1 last year after receiving carol- lers and others and believe it j or not we had frozen chicken j pies for christmas dinner hope im not getting maudlin fjut christmas used to be mer ry now its just hairy everyone needs a christmas stocking so take a few minutes now to make gay ones for every member of the family using a fascinating new gadget to attach imagina tive trims immediately- a new burton attacner about the size and shape of a fountain pen is equipped with a needlepointed end which inserts aplastic thread through holes in buttons to attach the burton securely and permanently to any material it can also attach sequinst felt cutouts in holiday motifs bows and ribbons names and numbers in far less time than a needle and thread would require to make the stockings cut stocking shapes from red felt biggestshapes for mom and dad smaller for the children cut felt cuffs to fit using the buttoner attach de corations to stockings the buttons hold cutouts in place use button attache to apply gold ttraicl rickrack sequins and james tofelt tops- i then with the right sides together join stocking sec tions sew felt tops to stockings so they will form a cuff when turned turn right side
