THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1996 Diamonds are a girl's best friend BY JAMIE HARRISON The Georgetown Gemini While some may contend that you have to have a sharp eye when it comes to expensive jewellry, Kelly Jacobs knows a sharp ear is better. The Georgetown resident won a $10,000, 1.16 carat diamond ring last Monday, courtesy of Kern's Jewellers and radio station Q-107, in Toronto. Kelly won a contest requiring her to correctly identify the title and artist of several segments of songs on the radio station's Mystery Music Montage. She was the first caller through on DJ Joey Vendet- ta's afternoon show who was able to correctly identify all 10 songs in the montage. "Td been dialing con- stantly, calling for about a week. [had to be; if wasn't I would have fallen." Bruce Duggan of Q-107's promotions department was on hand to present the ring to Jacobs. The contest was Duggan's idea and he was especially thrilled to find that a Georgtownian had won -- Duggan himselfis from Geor- getown. This led to some kid- ding by his co-workers, in- cluding Vendetta who asked him how his girlfriend liked her new ring. "T came up with the origi- nal concept with Darren Wasylyk (Q-107's promo- tions director)," Duggan said. "T'm recently engaged my- self, so I've got weddings on the brain. "My hat is off to Kern's and the promotions depart- ment at Q-107. I'm just glad someone from Georgetown won." A Kern's. spokesperson / said the decision to co-drdi- nate the diamond give-away campaign with Q-107 was "natural, given that Q-107 is a 'rock' radio station. Shelly Wilson of the Kern's outlet at the Georget- own Marketplace was sur- prised and delighted when she heard someone local had won the ring. "T thought it was neat. I thought it was pretty good that somebody local won it, and she's a customer, too, so that's great," Wilson said. Wilson said she's looking forward to getting Kelly into the store for her sizing. She's also looking forward to seeing the ring, the largest she recalls coming through the store. Jacobs won the ring after identifying brief snippets of the following songs: Like A Rolling Stone by The Rolling Stones, You Learn by Alanis Morrisette, We 're An Ameri- can Band by Grand Funk, Unknown Soldier by The Doors, Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis, Paradise City by Guns 'n' Roses, Elton John's Benny and the Jets, Crazy For You by Heart, The Who's Pinball Wizard, and In the Meantime by Spacehog. The contest ran on the ra- dio station throughout the summer. Rise 1 Halton Regional Police are currently investigating sev- eral thefts from vehicles at locations throughout Geor- getown.
