(905) 877-0045 Fee break for Bread Basket BY FRANCE NIBLOCK The Georgetown Gemini Organizers of Georgetown's fledgling Bread Basket food bank, who have been search- ing for a location to operate from for months, will not have to pay a $75 building permit fee for work at its new home at 247 Armstrong Av- enue, Unit 9. Town councillors agreed to Bread Basket organizer Colleen Brown's request to waive the fee for a permit to construct a fire wall so they can get insurance in the leased building. Brown explained that the building is rented by Joe Franco, who operates Astro Industries from several units and is willing to sub-lease space to the food bank at just $375 a month. "We hope to be open dur- ing the first two weeks of November to serve the roughly 225 Georgetown area families who don't have enough to eat," Brown ex- plained after Councillors agreed to waive the fee. Brown said that with just over $5,000 in the bank and projected start-up costs of $4,982, waiving the fee means a lot to the organizers, who have been trying to open anew food bank in Georget- own since the former Love In Christ Food Bank closed at the end of May. Brown noted that Home Hardware in Georgetown is supplying all of the neces- sary building materials at cost and that the fire wall would be built by volunteers. Brown said the Bread Bas- ket now has a 10-person Board of Directors and is being incorporated, and stressed that they wouldn't be where they are without the generous support of the com- munity and other groups, in- cluding Acton's FoodShare, which has donated shelves, food and their expertise. =: the Historical ~ Halloween Hunt A Contest sponsored by the Acton BIA and ._ The Acton Tanner Test your knowledge of some of Acton's ghoulish past.
