Guelph tourney productive for Senior Rebels Volleyballers BY KYLE GOODLET The Georgetown Gemini Coach Bob McKay and his senior boys Volleyball team travelled to The University of Guelph this past weekend to compete in the Guelph Gryphon's High School Boys Tournament. Although the Rebels experienced the agony of defeat more often than not, they come away from the weekend a better prepared team. The boys started off the tournament with aclose 16-14 loss to home-town Guelph Centennial and then came flat in the second game losing 15-4. In their next few matches the Rebs split games with Voaden, beat London Laurier in two straight and lost two to Stratford. Inthe quarter finals Ursuline College eliminated GDHS in close games of 15-11 and 15-12. "The boys faced tough competition in their pool which was made up of first place teams from various regions," said Coach McKay. Minor Novice Raiders have strong showing The Georgetown Raider Mi- nor Novices continue to ex- cel with recent wins in Bur- lington, Orangeville and Brampton, and a tough loss to Oakville. The Novices started their season with a decisive 6-1 win over Burlington. Jeff Bayley started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first. Chris Darling also scored in the first assisted by Bayley and Ryan Putnam. This goal was his first on the evening as the Georgetown crowd took their hats off to Chris for an early season hat trick. He went on to score in the second unassisted as he car- ried the puck the full length of the ice, and again in the third with help from Gregory Heywood. Jeff Bayley scored his second from Darling and Putnam, with Brady Gingras rounding out the scoring as- sisted by Heywood. The Novices continued on a winning streak at home to Orangeville with a first pe- riod marker by Ryan Putnam from Michael La Rose. Chris Darling found the ropes for an unassisted marker in the second, fol- lowed by Larose's goal from Raymond Martin. The Raiders sealed the vic- tory with a third period siz- zler from Martin assisted by Putnam and LaRose. Alex Bulgarelli had his first regu- lar season shut out in this 4-0 outcome. Oakville proved too much for the Raiders on the next outing as the locals were out skated by their southern neighbours. An early goal by Brett Reynolds, setup by Jeff Bayley and Michael Clost, was not enough to help the home side as Oakville took the win 4-1. The team travelled to Brampton and showed their true grit with an excellent 3- 2 win over the Maroons. Raymond Martin scored six minutes into the first, assisted by Mike LaRose. Two third period markers went to jeff Bayley and Chris Darling. assists went Michael Clost and Peter Bailey. Excellent aggressive skating and defense was provided by Pe- ter Bailey, Mitchell Thompson, Kyle Westwood and Cory McLaughlin; the Raiders' 4- man defensive squad. This winn was well fought by the Raiders who had lost two exhibition bouts to Brampton. Eagles finish third The Georgetown Eagles Rookie Ball squad travelled to Kingsville, Ontario this Fall to compete in the 1996 Provincial Championships. The boys faced teams from Belle River, Thorold, Lucan and Kingsville on their way to a third place finish in the tournament. Alex Redekop captured tournament MVP honours. ae JR.
