8 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI Local man gets caned BY JAMIE HARRISON The Georgetown Gemini Nothing makes Tony Lolic happier than getting caned. No, he's not into alternative lifestyles and he hasn't been spray-painting cars in Singa- pore. He's carrying ona fam- ily tradition which will soon have him making his network television debut. While he didn't plan to spend his life re-caning and re-weaving chairs, Lolic mar- ried into the tradition 1 1 years ago. His wife, Vicki, isone of the Glen Williams Harrington clan, agroup which has made a name for itself throughout the decades in giving new life to old furniture. "The tradition really be- longs on my wife's side," Lolic said. "Her family are long-time Glen residents. Her grandfather started caning in the Glen. Her parents did it too, and ran the Glen Gift Shop." Caning has its roots in both ancient Chinese and Egyp- tian cultures, making its way to England in the mid-18th century. The outside of the cane is the material used in caning, while the inner pulp of the wood is used to make wicker. After a recent showing in Oakville, Lolic was put in touch with the owner of Horse Feathers, an antique store in Toronto. That meeting led to achance encounter with Alex Newman, a researcher with HOMEStyle on CFTO tel- evision. Newman informed HOMEStyle host Anne Kennedy who had been look- ing for someone to do cane and wicker repairs on the show. The episodes are being taped this week. After working in the con- struction business and spend- ing time concentrating on other ventures, Lolic decided to dedicate his life full-time to reviving a dying vocation. The practise of caning is a rare commodity in Canada. Following the Second World War, many disabled veterans were taught caning, though many of those veterans have either left caning, or have died. "My hands are traveling in the same pattern, in the same way as 200 years ago," Lolic said. " It's humbling, something of a tradition." GETTING CANED: Tony Lolic works on one of a set of table chairs in his work- shop. This chair, both the backing and the seat will take about 30 hours to recane. Caning has been traced back to ancient Egyptian and Chinese cul- tures, making it's appear- ance in Europe in the mid- 17th century. (Jamie Harrison photo) different bars.
