8 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1996 Injuries more than just physical in attack Cont. from Page 6 All attention for the proper care of the attacker is para- mountto the system. Only by our own efforts did we find out that the attacker would be released from the psychiatric ward of Oakville Trafalgar Hospital and held for a bail hearing at 1:30 pm the day of our morning visit to the po- lice station to give a state- ment, eight days after the at- tack. During this eight-day pe- riod leading up to the hear- ing, we were told by the sys- tem that were not allowed to know the name of her at- tacker. We found out from friends the attacker's name -- even from people who heard GEORGETOWN & DISTRICT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL "A TIME TO REMEMBER" Honouring loved ones who have recently died at Georgetown Hospital The Pastoral Care Services of Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital extend an invitation to family and friends to attend a Memorial Service, Thursday October 24, 1996 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Hospital Boardroom R.S.V.P. They told of numerous frightening encounters with the attacker -- some not even reported to the police. A store owner advised of damage to his store by the attacker. He destroyed property and frightened customers away. Crown Attorney advice and police department advice indicated that the 19-year- old attacker focuses only on women and children. Throughout this week we were told by many who had direct involvement with the attacker that the attacker would escape forced detain- ment because his parents, who are professionals, have always been able to maneuver within the system to allow their dangerous man-child to walk our streets freely. We were assured by both Assistant Crown Attorneys acting on behalf of "the sys- tem" that there was no way he would escape this time. I reminded both that the O.J.(Simpson) trial gave many who trust the system a great sense of despair when O.J. was free to go. We were assured that "would nothappen here." The ~ Crown Attorney had an air tight case, we concluded. On Oct. 9, we attended the first bail hearing and the Crown asked the court and received two more days to complete their investigation. Because the police had not yet taken my wife's formal report, she prepared one and it was faxed to the Crown on Oct. 9. On Oct. 11, my wife and I spent a full day in court lis- tening to endless points of which laws seem to apply to the situation. The Court decided this psychologically impaired at- tacker was free to be cared for at a private farm owned by a lady who was expert in the case of the attacker and is on the payroll of the parents for professional services ren- dered prior to the attack. She gave testimony that on anumber of occasions, he would "bolt" out the door and run away. On some of these occa- sions he caused harm and fear in others until apprehended. She said this is what hap- pened the morning of Oct. 1. For you -- follow up with your MPP -- the welfare of your community is at stake. The trial will proceed to some conclusion, ifthere ever is one. The damage tous has been done. This attacker, however, may soon be in a neighbour- hood mall near you. Scott Campbell, Golf Chair John Fendley, Golf Co-Chair Fire Dept. warns of hazards The Halton Hills Fire Department would like people to be aware that filling metal gasoline cans and placing them on plastic surfaces can be a potential fire hazard. The fires have involved a metal gasoline container in the back ofa pick-up truck with a plastic bed liner. The insulating effect of the plastic liner hinders the static charge generated by gasoline from being grounded. eS ee Where do | shop for >ALL my Halloween Supplies for Wigs for Make-up for Masks for Balloons for Decorations for Party Supplies and choose from over 2000 Costumes!
