(Jamie Harrison photo) Georgetown South cemetery studied BY FRANCES NIBLOCK The Georgetown Gemini Developing a new cemetery adjacent to a proposed major sports park in Georgetown South is one option Town staff will study as it looks long-range at both future park and cemetery needs. Initially staff's cemetery update was requested by Council as background for a 1999 budget item to buy more cemetery land. The issue of putting acemetery in the pro- posed major sports park came up in September in a draft report by the Community Parkland Needs and Acqui- sition Study. That study proposed eight scenarios for a major sports facility and at least two of them included a cemetery adjacent to the sports park. The Town's Manager of Parks and Cemeteries, Bryan Shynal, said that his next ac- tion will be to bring to gen- eral Committee a recommen- 1 Batam 1°] Scoop, 66 Wetherby's esee* > | ie Roya CHRISTMAS Promo! i Presented by The Big Scoop Café, Wetherby's, The Harrop House, V.I.P. "That will either be with an option for adjacent cem- etery uses or without consid- eration for adjacent cemetery uses," Shynal said last week. Staff will also draft terms of reference for a consulta- tive study process to pinpoint alternatives, including the private sector, once Green- wood Cemetery is full. Because ofa relative short supply of single grave plots in both the Catholic and non- Catholic sections, staff will also prepare a redesign con- ceptto provide additional sin- gle grave plots, cremation plots and Niche walls. Staff reports that the re- maining capacity to meet current demand for plot sales at Greenwood is limited to eight to 10 years at best, and if it's necessary to establish a new facility after Greenwood closes, the study process should begin now. Although the municipal- ity is under no obligation to provide cemetery services, the Cemeteries Act makes the hostmunicipality assume and maintain any privately owned cemetery which becomes abandoned. Besides Greenwood Cem- etery, the Town owns and operates Acton's Fairview Cemetery, which has capac- ity well into the 21st century, and six pioneer cemeteries. Oops! We goofed up We seemed to have an invasion of the gremlins in last weeks' edition of The Gemini. First, regarding our photo spread on Remembrance Day ceremonies (The Gemini, Pg. 5, "A moment of silence ..."). In the photo of Julian Reed, Member of Parliament for Halton-Peel, we erroneously identified Mr. Reed as MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament), a position formerly held by Reed, but currently held by Ted Chudleigh. Further to our story on Brendon Prevost, the four-year-old hit by acar while trick-or-treating Halloween night. Prevost's legs were broken. His arms were not. The Gemini regrets the errors and apologizes for any embarrassment inadvertently caused. This newspaper is recyclable! BUSTS aE UBT aC ttl OUTER Gra ee eT LT of community-owned newspapers.
