WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1996 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI Main Street options discussed at meeting BY JAMIE HARRISON The Georgetown Gemini The November meeting of the Georgetown Community Consultation Committee in- cluded Business Improve- ment Area chair Emma Rock's presentation on the concerns of downtown mer- chants with regard to recent events on the street. Rock told the committee that a variety of options are being investigated to help solve the problems of loiter- ing, vandalism, and reports of possible drug dealing. Rock said that Town of Halton Hills councillors have taken a proactive role in try- ing to find solutions to these problems. Sergeant Scott McLaughlin reported that October had been a fairly quiet month for the Halton Regional Police Service with 12 incidents of thefts from cars reported, 41 charges of theft under $1,000, 42 as- sault complaints (18 charged, four outstanding), a few arsons, and a continuing fo- cus of stopping a series of break-ins on Dublin Line and capturing the culprits in- volved. Those break-ins have po- lice investigating a possible connection with similar break-ins reported by Guelph and Caledon OPP, who re- port break-ins with definite similarities. Sgt. McLaughlin also re- ported that in addition to Halton Regional Police Serv- ice's RIDE program, the Christmas program willsoon be activated. Regarding the continuing traffic situations on Maple Avenue and Mountainview Road, Sgt. McLaughlin re- ported that United Aggre- gates Ltd., (UAL) has been helpful in responding to the complaints of Maple Avenue residents. "UAL has helped tremen- dously. Ifa truck is on Maple Avenue before 6 am (the posted truck traffic curfew), the driver is banned from the quarry for one week. That translates to a lot of money because they are paid by the run," McLaughlin said. The committee also heard that in a recent Ministry of Transportation truck safety blitz, HRPS assisted in pull- ing over 19 trucks, of which 11 had serious safety viola- tions. Members of the police service are hosting a dance, from which the money raised will go to benefit two youth centres, one in Georgetown, the other in Milton. Committee member Doug « Magwood prevailedupon the committee to send a letter of support for the police service budget. The budget willmean 10 more constables in Halton. ART UPHOLSTERY LTD.
