Drinking and driving con- tinues to be one of the lead- ing factors in fatal motor ve- hicle collisions. Strict en- forcement of the drinking and driving laws and public awareness campaigns are vi- tal components of any com- prehensive effort to reduce the needless deaths, injury and property damage caused by drinking drivers. Through the concerted ef- forts of our RIDE spot check program, and the good judg- ment of drivers, Halton po- lice believe impaired driving WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1996 Cops kick off RIDE program can be reduced in Halton Region. During the 1995 festive RIDE season in the Region of Halton, 17,110 vehicles were checked by RIDE of- ficers. These checks resulted in four alcohol related crimi- nal driving offenses and 39 roadside screening device tests. The roadside test re- sulted in one 12-hour sus- pension. The goal of the festive RIDE program this year is to check in excess of 20,000 vehicles. With additional funding, officers of the serv- ice will have a RIDE spot check lane setup almost every day from now until the end of the year.
