DEADLINE IS SUNDAY NIGHT SEVEN MINUTE POWERPLAY HURTS TEAM Penalties costly as Jr. A Raiders watch win slip away BY TERRY ROUSE The Georgetown Gemini The Georgetown Junior A Raiders hockey team contin- ues to battle tough even though they just can't get any breaks. They fell short again this week dropping back to back games on the weekend. In Burlington on Friday night the Raiders were lead- ing 3-2 with just over five minutes to play in the game. A mistake in their own end turned the game around, as Burlington capitalized on their scoring opportunities. The Burlington squad then used the momentum from scoring the tying goal to even- tually take the lead late and hang on for a 4-3 win. Athome Saturday the team dropped another heart- breaker, 5-4 to the Streetsville Derbys. Again the Raiders were leading up 3-1 late in the sec- ond, when the team took a costly seven minute penalty. The young Raiders team is making inexperienced mis- takes, which continues to cost them. Streetsville exploded for four power play goals during that seven minute span at the end of the second and begin- ning of the third period. The Derby's then held on for a 5- 4 victory. "You can see this team is just about to start winning," said head coach and GM Rick Bince. "We are starting to score goals and play better in our own end, it is just a mat- ter of time," he added. came fourth. Joe Foster. Everingham. him honest with 774. In second place is Brackys Grillers who also won by 9-5 over Royal Pizza Two. Third place is owned by Legion One, mak- ing a late move up the tables after winning 12-2 at Legion Three. Another 9-5 winner is fourth place, Brackys Brew Crew, Pattys One being the vanquished. Legion Two, move into fifth spot, winning 11-2 at Pattys Two. McGibbon One, who won their first match a couple of weeks ago, faced Royal Pizza One, who were the last team left yet to win. A close match ended with Pizza winning out by 8-6. McGibbon One opened with both teams four wins, followed by two of the first three singles. Matters looked good at this stage. Pizza regrouped with four singles in succession before McGibbon won the closing single in a family match up. (The parent was not too pleased with the offspring) 5-5 going into the doubles could not have been closer and set the stage for a battling finish. The first pair of dou- bles went 1-1, leaving the closing two sets with Pizza for that elusive win. Dave Scutt fired 180 and four 140 scores to make 11 bonus points and the week's top scorer with 15. Julie McCorry, Bruce Hope, and Terry Hancock each made 10 points. Hancock and Hope both high finished as well as did Dan Dorbeen.
