WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1996 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI Main Street reconstruction concerns BY FRANCES NIBLOCK The Georgetown Gemini Worried that there is "some unrest" and no consensus on the proposed design to re- construct Main Street, Coun- cillor John Day asked Coun- cil to direct its consultant to physically stake out the pro- posed roadway, curb and sidewalks on Main Street between Maple Avenue and Church Street. "T get the sense that there is a need to see what that design will look like in the field," Day explained in an interview on Friday. At last week's Council meeting, Day asked staff what message was being sent to the consultant with a re- port indicating the prelimi- nary design concept included concrete sidewalks on both sides of the road, on-street parking south of Park Street on the east side only with parking on both sides north of Park Street and an 8.3 metre, two-lane driving sur- face. Staff insisted that the report was for information only and not meant to send any message to the consult- ant about the final design. "Given the current unrest, I was concerned that was sending amessage to the con- sultant that there was full agreement about the design, when in fact, there is no con- sensus," Day explained. Day said there are many competing interests in the project with some people wanting to preserve the her- itage nature of the southern entrance to the downtown with its mature maple trees and others who view the downtown as a destination and want the road wider with more parking for shoppers. One Main Street resident, Linda Walton, who isamem- 5 Se! | ber of the Residents and Neighbourhood Groups (RNG) Committee, com- plained that the Town and consultant are not listening tothe RNG Committee's con- cerns and suggestions. "We're getting screwed," Walton said in an interview on Friday. "The RNG came up with 13 suggestions but only two of those showed up in the consultant's latest drawings. "Nobody disputes that the road needs work but some of us want it to remain narrow and quiet. Why it needs to be upgraded to this ugly point, I don't know," Walton said. Staff report that a final RNG Committee meeting and pubic information session willbe held in 1997 to present the final design drawings for comment. Construction is slated for next summer.
