4 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1996 Town to restructure grants BY FRANCES NIBLOCK The Georgetown Gemini The Glen Williams Town Hall Committee is one of two community groups which will receive a grant from the Town this year and it won't know how much it will re- ceive for several months. The Town Hall committee will use the money to help stage the Canada Day cel- ebration. The other organi- zation which willreceive cor- porate funding is the Acton Citizen's Band. Although staff had sug- gested that both groups re- ceive 92.5 per cent of the Town grants that they got last year, $4,625 and $555 respectively, councillors didn't want to be locked into any amounts heading into the budget debates and left the dollar figures out. While agreeing to fund only the groups that received grants last year, Council also endorsed staff's recommen- dation to give responsibility forthe annual corporate grant program next year to the Rec- reation and Parks Depart- ment, which will set up an advisory committee to de- velop a strategy and imple- mentation plan for the dis- bursement of all forms of grants to eliminate inconsist- encies and inequities. While the list of groups that receive grants each year has dwindled to two, a number of organizations and groups receive subsidies through reduced rental rates and waivers of fees for li- censes. The Town provides approximately $300,000 in subsidies to recreation and cultural groups each year. Both groups will have to wait until budget debates in the New Year to find out how much of a grant they will receive. Connect Now!
