Looking back on the events of 1996 can prepare us for what's tocome in 1997. Continued from last week. JUNE BD. OF ED. RESCINDED LAY-OFF: The Halton Board of Education rescinds layoffnotices to 460 elemen- tary and secondary school teachers, leaving 112 second- ary school teachers in the lurch. The layoffs were originally announced as part of the pro- vincial government's educa- tion restructuring plan. JUST ONE LOSS: The GDHS Rebels girls softball squad lost just one game all year. Unfortunately, it was for the whole enchilada. The squad was dumped by Bishop Reding in Milton, ending an otherwise perfect season with a 9-7 loss. JULY PIPE BOMB DAMAGED HOMES: A Calvert Drive resident awoke to find some- one had tossed a pipe bomb into his backyard. The bomb damaged two houses and left a2' crater in the yard, but no one was injured. Police had no suspects in the bombing. BINCE IS BACK: Rick Bince returns to the Raider foldas he is hired on as coach and general manager of the Jr. A Raiders. McGAW HEADED TO | OVER 100 NEW VEHICLES!! THE HORSEY SET: Despite a hurricane, The RCMP Musical Ride was a highlight of the 150th Fall Fair. ATLANTA: Olympian Kara McGaw prepares to accom- pany the Canadian Women's Softball squad to Atlanta to compete in the summer Ol- ympics. Despite a prediction that the team would take the gold, some bad bounces and some suspect umpiring left the squad without any med- als. AUGUST HUNGRY HOLLOW BRIDGE OPENED: The opening of the much antici- pated bridge connection Georgetown South and the rest of town opened over Hungry Hollow. The bridge allows for two lanes of traffic -- one each way -- until the other lanes open later in the year. SKATEBOARDING IN THE HOT SEAT: Skate- boarding becomes front page news in Georgetown after continual clashes between residents, youths and police. Const. Keith Bennett starts the ground work to find a peaceable solution to the problem. ACCIDENT DELAYED CONSTRUCTION: No one was injured when apile driver toppled over on the newly opened Ninth Line bridge. Construction was delayed as Ministry of Labour officials investigated the scene. ARTIST WAS A HIT IN JAPAN: Local artist Leslie Harvey found great success overseas, selling his mini- ature watercolour paintings in Japan. SEPTEMBER RAIN AND MUSICAL RIDE HIGHLIGHTED FALL FAIR: After eight straight weekends of zero precipitation, Georgetown was blasted by Hurricane Fran just in time for the Fall Fair. Dampened but undaunted, the RCMP Musical Ride was on hand to help Georgetownians celebrate the 150th edition of the fall classic. TERRY FOX RUN WAS FINALLY A GOs Despite fears of not being able to host a Terry Fox Run this year, the community pulled together to help Bonnie Covert organ- ize the annual event to raise money for cancer research.
