THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI 5 Chudleigh hails provincial reforms In response to the recent an- nouncements made by the Minister of Education and Training, and the Minister of Community and Social Serv- ices regarding fundamental Provincial reform, Halton North MPP Ted Chudleigh said that he believes the changes will be better for Ontario. "I believe that these changes will resultin the con- tinued elimination of waste, overlap and duplication so we can deliver better quality services at a lower cost to the taxpayer, reduce property taxes, be more competitive and create jobs," Chudleigh said. The government an- nounced that it will take $5.4. billion for education off the property tax bill. Education costs are rising and the government wants to bring them under control and restore excellence in the classroom. In exchange, other serv- ices will be moved to the lo- cal level where they can be delivered more efficiently. The savings from welfare re- forms will also be shared with local governments. There have been 24 stud- ies on reforming education since 1950. Most agree that by taking education off property tax, efficiencies can be found across the system. "Overthe last decade, enrollment in our schools has risen 16 per cent and inflation has risen 40 per cent, but school board spend- ing has shot up by 82 per cent and standards have not kept pace. That is not acceptable," the MPP said. In response to different levels of funding for students across the province, Chudleigh said, "We will meet the needs of students wherever they are -- from Halton North to Dryden. All students will have the same opportunities." DELICIOUS! Paola Tomasetti and Lori-Anne Succo opened their new business, Pasta Plus, last week.
