S Raiders blow chance at win BY TERRY ROUSE The Georgetwon Gemini The Georgetown Raiders were staring victory right in the face Monday night at Vaughan, but the Vipers turned up the pressure and were able to squeak out a 3-2 win over the struggling Raid- ers. "We choked," said head coach and GM Rick Bince. "We should have at least come out of there with a point. They turned up the pressure and we started panicking," an upset Bince added. The Raiders had estab- lished a 2-0 lead entering the third period on goals by Andrew Peters and Rob MacLeod, but as they have done a lot this year, they found a way to lose yet an- other one goal decision. Saturday night at home the Raiders fell behind early and were never able to fully re- cover despite a spirited effort by the team. "Saturday night was one of our better games of the year," said Bince de- spite dropping the game 5-4. After one period the Raid- ers were down 2-1, and after two periods Hamilton had extended their lead to 4-2 as they held on for the narrow win. Scoring for the Raiders were Bill Rennie with a pair, Krystopher Barch and Garry McNiven adding singles. Even the coach of Hamilton was impressed with the Raid- ers effort trying to understand why they didn't have a few more wins. A problem Bince has been trying to understand for a while himself. Friday night the Raiders were thumped by Vaughan at home 8-3, but were able to bounce back and play two of their better games after the loss. The Raiders are busy this week playing all weekend Friday through Monday. Novice Raiders open first round of playoffs The Georgetown Minor Nov- ice Raiders opened their Tri- County playoffs with a close contest in Milton, edging the Winterhawks with an excit- ing last second goal to win 2- 1.The Raiders held their op- ponents to only four shots on goal. Scoring for Georget- own was Gregory Heywood from Kyle Westwood and Jeff Bayley and Raymond Martin assited by Mike LaRose. Their next outing against Oakville was a disappointing 7-0 loss for the Georgetown GM LINCOLN-MERCURY 877-2261 squad, however they bounced back and came out firing on all cylinders to start their best of five series in the OMHA play against Burlington. It was a great team effort as the Raiders won with a decisive 9-2 final. On the strength of a hat trick by Jeff Bayley, the team took a commanding start to the series. Also scoring for the Raiders were Chris Dar- ling an Raymond Martin with two apiece and Michael Clost and Mitch Thompson. THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI orts WE WANT YOUR TEAM REPORTS! After only amonth of train- ing, the Rebels traveled to McMaster University plac- ing second only to last year's OFSSA champions, the Kennedy Clippers of Wind- sor. "] was impressed with the swimmers doing so well at the meet," said coach Jon Newcombe. "Kennedy has been training since the be- ginning of the school year with 11 practices a weekcom- pared with our late start and only five practices a week." The second meet, also held at McMaster, saw most of the rookie Rebels compete for the first time. All Rebels swam admirably and were easily the most spirited team in the pool. Overall result from the three meets attended so far are too numerous to mention here, but there have been some splendid swims with three swimmers qualifying for OFSSA: Shirley Grant in the Senior Girls 100m free- style; Fraser Charles in the Senior Boys 100m freestyle; HALTON HILLS' NO. 1 CHOICE FOR FORD TRUCKS! and Laurie Crocker in the Open Girls 100m freestyle. Crocker also set a new school record in the 100m freestyle. Eight relay teams have quali- fied and several other swim- mers are close. This will be a building year for the Rebels. Feeling the loss of 10 senior swimmers who have moved on, for the first time in several years there is a large group of jun- iors. CALL FOR DETAILS
