"I'm confused," admitted Ward 3 Councillor John Day in an interview on Sunday, adding that it may be appropriate to bring the final plan back to councillors, although that's not what is normally done. Some residents com- plained following last Thurs- day's fourth and final public information centre on the plan, that parts of the design staked out on the street by the consultant to show people what the street would look like, were not what was in the plan at the final meeting. "I think there's enough wide public interest that we should all know the direction we are taking on this project," Day said. At a special meeting on Monday night councillors rejected downsizing Council in time for the November municipal election and instead stuck with a decision made in July to do a comprehensive re- view involving representa- tion on both local and Re- gional Councils and possible revisions to the ward bounda- ries in time for the municipal election in 2000. Although the decision must still be ratified at Coun- cil on Monday, it was clear from statements made by councillors, two-thirds have "We need to see that final plan. Downsizing opponents argue it would mean in- creased workload, wouldn't save much money and is pre- mature until Queen's Park clarifies its municipal reform plans. : A suggestion from Geor- getown Councillor Anne Currie to cut to seven councilors - one local coun- cillor for each of the four wards, two regional council- lors and the mayor - lost ona 9-4 vote and unless there are citizen delegations at Mon- day's meeting, it looks like the issue will be closed. Here's what councillors said: WARD 3 John Day - No "Last July I put forward the notion that one doesn't pre-determine the size of a ship's crew until "A", we know the direction of the ship; "B", the size of the vessel; DAY -- NO and "C", its purpose. I think that still holds true here to- day. I think that restructuring to meet a bottom line, to be more efficient, to do better with less, is intrinsically good in itself, but I think that part of that equation is that we See COUNCIL,Page 2 GEORGETOWN Aa e SL A UY Sa SALE!
