10 THE GEORGETOWN GEMINI Mad Cows run amok in Second City BY JAMIE HARRISON The Georgetown Gemini Forashow entitledMadCows and Englishmen, it had shockingly little in the way of cows or Brits, though it did have the audience laughing madly. The national touring com- pany of The Second City made a sold-out appearance last Saturday night at the John Elliott Theatre in Georget- own, keeping the audience in stitches for over two hours. It was also a homecoming of sorts for troupe member Lora McGee, a Georgetown native. McGee and her five compatriots put ona perform- ance full of Canadian truisms and audience participation. Chief among them was a sketch about Canada as a na- tion, as personified by an in- toxicated woman talking to a bartender. She reveals pieces of her life through her vari- ous "affairs" with Canadian aaa Prime Ministers, recalling her first love, John A., a brief fling with Joe Clark, and an era of "experimentation" with Kim Campbell. Following the scripted portion of the show was an onslaught of contemporary, often biting humour hitting only a few lulls -- the im- provisation portion of the evening took over. The six actors reacted to audience suggestions of where to take the skits. An- other improv had the actors stop one another in mid-scene not only to take over the physical stylings of the ac- tors they were replacing, but taking the scene in another direction. Overall, The Second City put on another tightly acted performance, reminiscent of previous alumna such as Eugene Levy, Andrea Mar- tin, Gilda Radner and John Belushi. Though the show did seem to lag in parts, they were quickly corrected, each skit following a succinct timing, giving the show a quick pace. In the end, it was hard to believe over two hours had passed since the beginning of the show -- always a mark of a quality, performance. $1600 damage to parked car The driver of a Volkswagen Jetta reported to police that his car sustained $1,600 worth of damage after it was dented, the paint scratched and the aerial broken as it was parked at a Park Avenue apartment building. Police have no suspects in the crime. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1997 ANNIVERSARY: In 1941 the Halton Region Federation of Agriculture was formed. Its motto was, "Farmers working with Farmers," and its goal was to produce all the food it could to help win the war. Fifty-five years later this organization can pride itself on remaining true to its motto, and now more than ever, working together to maintain the resources and political climate for food production is a challenge to local farmers. At a recent Board meeting, the directors celebrated the 55th anniversary of the organization. From left: Lieven Gevaert, and Harry Brander did the honours.
