The Town has $110,000 in the budget to demolish the aging building, but the Acton Agricultural Society is attempting to come up with a plan to save at least part of the facility so that it will continue to have a building for its home crafts during the Fall Fair. "We'd like to keep the block building that was built in 1962, and hopefully the cement pad that the arena building sat on as well," explained Agricultural Society member Janis Fread in an interview on Saturday. Asked if the building would be sufficient for the Society's needs Fread said that it would be "better than nothing," and would provide the Fair with more washrooms and a secure place to show the antiques and other valuable home craft items that are submitted to the Fair each year. Initially the Society had hoped to garner enough interest and support among its members to try to save the entire area facility, but Fread said they've had to revise their plans to "bare bones" and what Society members feel is possible to get and manage, Fread said the proposed plan at this point would be to erect a tent on the arena pad to house some of the exhibits because the block building is not large enough. "The building would house the stuff that we are nervous about like the antiques and quilts and the rest -- the roots and vegetables and school work, could be housed in an adjoining tent," Fread explained. If the Town rejects attempts to save the block building, Fread said the Society might have to source out using a local school or another nearby facility for the home crafts and possibly the Fair's Friday night entertainment.
