Monday night Acton dropped a 3-2 game to Tilsonburg to end their playoff hopes. --Frances Niblock photo Base wins spiel John Base's rink out of Oakville was the big winner in the 23rd ACCO Wrigley Classic curling champion- ship held at rinks in Acton, North Halton and Milton on the weekend. Base's rink took home the grand prize of $5,000 follow- ing Sunday's closing game in Acton. A total of $16,500 in prize money was up for grabs by the 32 rinks entered in the popular spiel. Olympic silver medallist Mike Harris was a no-show at the event -- he was forced to pull out at the last minute because of pneumonia, but his father Bob and two broth- ers did participate. On Friday Acton's Fred Archibald said that he was "thrilled" to have played against the two-time world curling champ Ed "The Wrench" Werenich, even though his rink lost all three of its games. "We buggered up and * gave him a four-ender and . that was it," Archibald said, adding that it wasn't all that intimidating to play against Werenich. Also on Archibald's rink were Peter Vidler, Pete Lawlor and Ken Armstrong. "They gave it all they had but our shots just didn't go in," coach Jamie Shepherd said when asked about the first of three games Acton needed to win. Acton got off to a slow start in the first quarter but rallied and beat Hamilton in the second. The Redmen were sluggish to start the third and Hamilton took the win Shepherd didn't single out high scores is the e but said that they all did eve- rything right. "The team has showed a major improvement since the beginning of the season. One of the ref's told me that I had a great bunch of guys and that's probably the highlight for my year." It's been 20 years since Acton sent a team to the On- tario championships and this year's squad had the best fin- ish in that time. Under-7 Taylor Mann had an out- standing game, scoring three goals to lead the Orange team to a 5-3 win over the White team on Saturday. Stephen Van Helden and Jesse Steenhius had the Or- ange team's other goals while Rebecca Sampson had an assist and Kevin Hamilton played a great game in goal. Mark Wells netted two of the White team's goals while teammate Thomas Pottruff had a single. Kyle Tulk, Kevin Lee and Jesse Breen had assists. Under-10 Kyle Napp found the net five times to lead the No. 3 team to a 7-2 trouncing of the No. 4 team. Sarah Iantorno and Justin Breen netted No. 3's other two goals. Kyle Payne and Anglelynn Bland scored for No. 4. EK Tim Medland scored twice and had a great game in goal for No. 2 team as it narrowly defeated MacMill- an's Frozen Foods 4-3 on Saturday. Nils-Olay Stock- inger and Justin Breen net- ted No. 2's other goals and Mitchell Thomas gets spe- cial mention for his outstand- ing defensive plays. Joshua Dickieson booted two of MacMillan's goals while Kyle Wrigglesworth had the third. Under-13 Joe Douglas scored 5 is in Bev Gray Design rvice's 11-4 shellacking of Lakeview Flooring on Satur- day. Lisa Robson found the net three times while teammates Daniel Nikic, Lindsay Sampson and Torin Dopelt each had singles. Both Corey Burgan and Thomas Polls found the net twice for Lakeview. **K The White team pulled off a short-handed 5-3 win over the blue team on Saturday. Bantams edged out by Fergus in sixth game The clock struck twelve for the Cinderella Bruce Hood Travel Bantam 2's on Friday night in Fergus as they were beaten 5-4 in the sixth game of the OMHA quarter finals. This loss eliminated Acton from fur- ther OMHA play. Considering it was a five game series, being in the sixth game alone is a testa- ment to the closeness of the two teams. There were two overtimes, one tie and three games decided by one goal. "It was a great series," McPhail. "Neither team ever gave up. I'm proud of our boys and their efforts." He's especially pleased with the work by goalies Adam Field and Rory Dick. "We wouldn't have got this far without them." In the extra game, Stephen Monaghan provided the excitement with two late markers while Mike Hyrn and Ryan Weatherall netted the others. Both Hector Alanes and Kris Adema found the net twice in the Orange team's 5-4 win over the Light Blue team. Kingston Patterson also scored. Atom Sabres take win over Fergus The Acton Atom Sabres played a very aggressive game in Sunday's 5-2 win over Fergus in Tri-County playoff action at Acton. Fergus managed only 10 shots on goal as the Sabres' defense did its job. Kyle McDonald, Nick Ridler and Kurtis McArthur each had single goals and assists while teammates Scott Williams and Matt Locke each found the net once. Matt Freckleton and Nick Johnson also had assists. The Atoms had a 3-2 win over Faustina in M.T.H.L. exhi- bition play on Feb. 25. Goalies Josh Locke and Brandon Kernohan split a shut out on Feb. 24 when the Atom Sabres blanked Arthur 10-0 in Tri-County playoff action. The whole team played well with some outstanding pass- ing and defense. Greg Black, Kyle Marshall, Kyle McDonald, Nick Ridler and Matt Freckleton each found the net twice tor the Sabres while assists went to Scott Williams, Cory Wilson, Nick Johnson (2), Matt Locke (3), McDonald, Ridler and Marshall.
