(519) 853-5731 56 Mill St. East, Acton Junior Redmen cop win Andrew Watson was top scorer for the Acton High Redmen junior boys' soccer team as it captured the cham- pionship at an inter-school tournament in Burlington on Friday. Acton dropped its first game against host M.M. Robinson 1-0, but then came back strong to win its next four games. Acton's short-game pass- ing improved in the second half of game two, which Acton won with a 2-1 score over Aldershot. Andrew Watson and Jay Waples scored for the Redmen in that game. Andrew Watson and Samson both scored in Acton's 2-1 blanking of Milton in game three. Acton met Oakville Tra- falgar in the semi-final and pulled offa big 2-1 upset vic- tory with goals from Samson and Stewart. Acton won the champion- ship game with a 4-3 score over Burlington Central. Watson scored twice while Jeff Payne and Shawn Gray had singles. Acton was down 1-0 but managed to tie it up at the end of the first half. Aldershot came back with two quick goals in the sec- ond half and Acton answered with two goals of its own. Acton then scored the go- ahead goal for the win. Paul Leminski played well in goal in all five of the games. SENIOR BOYS Andre Savard was named MVP in last Thursday's sen- ior boys' Swift Kick soccer tournament in Burlington. Savard scored one goal and played well as Acton won one of its three games. Acton played under- manned for the first game- and- a- half and was blanked 4-0 by M. M. Robinson in game one. The senior Redmen dropped a 5-2 deci- sion to host Lester B. Pearson in .game two. Darryn McIntyre scored for Acton in that game. Acton doubled Milton dis- trict High 4-2 to take game three. Andrew Pearson scored twice in that game while Savard and McIntyre each booted singles for the win. Travis Stewart was in goal all three games. Coach Gord Swanson said that Acton opened the scor- ing and went up 2-0. "Burlington came back with one goal and then we went up to 3-1. They came back and got a second goal to make it 3-2 and we put the fourth one in," Swanson said on Friday. On Wednesday, after deadline, the Redmen met Vanier in an away game in Brampton for it's last OFSCA qualifier. "Tf we win that we go the championships in the "A/ AA" division. The winner of that game goes onto the next round and then to the re- gional qualifier and then to the all-Ontario tournament next month," Swanson said. Last Wednesday the sen- ior boys lost 1-0 at home to T.A. Blakelock in a game that saw lots of back and forth and sometimes chippy play. Phil McIntyre was in goal. JUNIOR GIRLS The junior girls wrapped up their season with a 5-1-0 record after being blanked 5- 0 by Q.E. Park in inter- school tournament play on Thursday in Oakville. "For the first half Acton had control of the ball but just couldn't score," explained co-coach Amy Boycott in an interview on Friday. Price Check made two run down plays and one pick off play but still came up one run short of a tie, despite scoring four runs in a fifth inning rally. Jamie McGhie had three walks and scored three times while Shawn Richards had a single, a double and a walk, scoring three times. Chris Galda had two RBIs and Michael Meade scored once. Tricky Adam Burgess scored once by stealing home on a pass ball. Coach John Burgess said that McGhie, Krystl Egan and Adam Burgess pitched very well. Class of the Syncro set Halton Hills Association of Synchronized Swimmers attended their first routine competition of 1998 in April at the London Aquatic Cen- tre in London, Ontario. All three teams sent to London came back with first place. Also competing were London Syncro Club, Brant Syncro club, Chatham Y Orcas and Sarnia Y Syncro. The intermediate com- petitive team: music, Lord of the Dance, was coached by Taryn Kentner at level 4-6 Trillium, ages 15 plus. Mem- bers were Nicole Culp, Mandy Greaves, Jolianna Krock, Kendra Peacock, Cristal Sargent, Laura Takahiski and Jennifer Varey. The senior competitive team swam to Staying Alive under coach Meghan Kentner. Level is Trillium 4- 6 and ages 12-14 years. Members are Emily thompson, Meghan Ananthan, Amy Faulhafer, Samantha Thompson , Stephanie Wasylyk. The senior competitive team which swam to the mu- sic of Romeo and Juliet was also coached by Meghan Kentner at a level of Trillium 7 plus for ages 15 and up.
