PROFESSIONAL GOLF CLUB REPAIR 19> * repairs to all makes * custom fitting * new & used clubs for sale Len Dodds 519-853-9988 TOM OAKLEY * BLOCKS * BRICKS * MASONRY REPAIRS * STONE WORK Tom Oakley Charity gaming club proposed for Mohawk Mohawk Raceway may be the site of anew charity gam- ing club as part of the pro- vincial government's expan- sion of gambling. The On- tario Jockey Club and the Town of Milton hosted a pub- lic meeting last night (Wednesday) to discuss the possibility. The proposal would in- stall 40 gaming tables for games of chance and slot machines in a self-contained area in the main grandstand of the Campbellville-based raceway known as "Sports." The proposed expansion into charity gaming is partly the result of decreased at- tendance at standardbred race meets. The Ontario Jockey Club, which ordinar- ily ran 140 race dates, has Softball scheduled only 100 this year because of an almost 50 per cent drop in attendance. Forty fewer racing dates has resulted in a large drop in income for harness own- ers as well as trainers and business in Nassagaweya. The Jockey Club believes the fiscal scene is only going to get werse unless they act to prop it up and sustain the track's long-term viability. The director of gaming operations for the Jockey Club has said that live rac- ing will remain the main fo- cus at the track. The enter- tainment dollars, he predicts would ensure live racing at Mohawk continues. Plans to improve the Raceway include construction of a new 7/8 mile track to attract the best horses in North America. The Jockey Club now offers free admission and parking for every race date. Councillor Cindy Lunau, who represents Nassagaweya at Milton Council, says the proposal isn't something she personally likes but the eco- nomic significance to Nassagaweya is tremendous. If we must have gambling clubs, then at least we know it will be controlled, Lunau says, of the proposal. It will be contained and well run. The tracks employ a lot of people from a wide area in- cluding Acton, she points out. "We lose big time if we lose the tracks," she ac- knowledged.
