6 THE NEW TANNER Watch for phone scam Seniors, in fact everyone, are being warned about a tel- ephone scam which can re- sult in long distance calls being billed to your phone number. An individual who iden- tifies himself as an AT&T service technician phones to say he.is conducting a test on the telephone line. He states that to complete the test you should touch nine (9), zero (0), then the pound (#) sign and then hang up. Don't do it! This gives the person full access to your tel- ephone line. Bell Canada has verified the information. ( Halton Hills - Thanks a lot! » Grand Opening Party was a huge success! By JEAN SOMERVILLE The Tea Lady of southern Ontario, Melody Wren of Guelph, was the guest speaker at Knox Presbyterian Church recently. Attired in a Victorian- style outfit, she discussed the art of hosting afternoon tea, the history of tea and customs related to its use. Her book, Tea Rooms of Southern On- tario, has been popular and gives description of over 80 tea rooms including the menus, ambience and points of local interest. The Ladies' Aid of Knox were celebrating their 110% anniversary and hosted the old-fashioned tea. Several ladies presented a history of some of the events and their activities since the organiza- tion began in 1888. A wealth of information was provided by the secretaries' and treas- urers' books kept since 1919. Stories of well attended arden parties held on the awns of members' homes, local farms and in the Acton Park were recalled. The popularity of fowl suppers and the challenge of feedin; over 500 guests in the churc! basement was also detailed. Following the program, a dainty lunch was served. A display of the anniversary autographed quilt, the La- dies' Aid banner, photos and other memorabilia was en- joyed by the large crowd.
