12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1998 Fairboard ready for fundraising Dear Editor: We're ready to go! / The members of the Acton Agricultural Society spent the past five to six years grappling with the de- cision of what to do once the new arena and community centre was in place. We chose to stay in the Prospect Park location, when offered the opportunity to move our fair up to the new arena, because we believe that the park is a unique setting and adds to the character of our fair. We decided however, that we could not run our fair without a building to house the thousands of homecraft exhibits we attract annually or the Miss Acton pageant. The feasibility study we com- missioned by the University of Guelph, completed in 1996, recommended that we not save the old building for our use. But at that time, we felt our "nest egg" combined with fund raising would not raise enough dollars to sup- port a new building. As in any issue of this nature, there were some who supported keeping the old building and some who pushed for a new building scaled down to meet our needs. We looked at many, many alternatives to owning our own building, including tents, buildings off-site, a bubble, use of the Legion, etc. but in the end, it was decide that we must have a building. Legion ladies hold Christmas party By PEGGY HARRIS The December meeting was held in the form of a Christmas party with 48 members present. The 50/50 draw was won by Norm Titus and Delia Kentner. Murray McNabb and his crew served a delicious meal and Kent Tocher entertained the ladies. Teresa Uiterwyk, Marg Dunn, Cindy Clarke, Angie Dunn, Kathy Verbeek, Celine Clarke, Lucy Synnott, Delia Kentner, Pat Peterson, Annamarie Lowin, Gail Gibson and Peggy Harris will be bowling in the Provincials in April. January 16, 1999 is the Appreciation Dinner, pre- pared and served by the men of our Legion. Contact Lily if you weren't at our Christ- mas dinner to get your name on the list so we know you're coming. While the decision. of council to go ahead with the demolition plans was a great disappoint- ment to many, we, the vol- unteers of the Acton Agricul- tural Society, believe we got about the best deal possible under the circumstances. We sincerely thank our three Acton councillors, Norm Elliott, Rick Bonnette and Clark Somerville, for their relentless pursuit in obtain- ing the favourable terms of the final agreement. We also thank the members of the community that rallied around and showed support. A new and revitalized fundraising/building com- mittee has been struck and, thanks to the wonderful sup- port of Peter Zions Construc- tion, we have our first fundraiser to raffle - a beau- _tiful two-storey Victorian playhouse. We have a very affordable quote on a pre-en- gineered building and mem- bers of the community have been coming forth with offers ofuse of equipment, time and products to help us construct it. We're confident that with diligent hard work, we will raise the funds to construct a new building that will ensure the Acton Fall Fair will stay in Prospect Park for another 85 years! The annual Seniors' Christmas Party saw over 300 people enjoy an evening of great food and entertain- ment with all the proceeds going to local charities. To our members and the local Rotary Club, thank you for volunteering your time and effort into this successful and beneficial evening for our seniors. Now for a few upcoming events to watch for: Dec. 31, 1998: with only a limited number of New Year's Eve tickets remaining at $35 each, which include entertainment in the way of music, party favours and a buffet meal, time is running out. There are also six re- freshment drink tickets in- cluded in the price. This promises to be the best place to go when it comes to New Year's evening parties. Jan. 1, 1999: President Gary Munday has asked me to make sure all Br. 197 members realize that this year's levee promises to be the best ever held. Well, we have a huge screen, games and a BBQ ready. Get a group together and come on down. You need not be a branch member to come out for this function of the fol- lowing events: Jan. 23, 1999: We're holding a Valentine's Dance and there will be a draw for two dinners for two for those attending. Christmas meeting BY EDITH MEDLAN The ladies of Bannockburn Women's In- stitute met in the beautifully decorated home of Linda Cairns for their Christmas meeting. A delicious turkey dinner with all the trimming was enjoyed by all the members. Ina Peterson read a lovely poem entitled "Let Us Live Christmas Every Day." Isabel McDonald gave a reading called "My Christmas Book." Gifts were exchanged and Christmas carols and songs were sung. A good time was had by all.
