12 THE NEW TANNER. THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 1999 Major Novice Tanners Windsor champs For the second time in as many weeks, the Acton Ma- jor Novice Hockey Tanners was victorious in tournament play. On Friday, January 15" the team travelled to Wind- sor, for an international tour- nament that would span three days and include four games. When it was all over, the Acton team was the un- disputed Major Novice "A" Division Champions! The series began with a game against the Humberview Huskies (To- ronto). The Huskies were no match for the Tanners, as Acton easily defeated them by a score of 7-2. For the second game, Acton. faced the Affton Americans (Michigan). Once again, the scoring prowess and defensive force of the Acton team was far too great for the competition, as they ecole Afton by a score of The third game proved to be more ofa challenge for the yet unchallenged Acton team. They faced a fast paced, tight checking team from Missouri called the Granite City Steelers. The final score of the third game was 4-0 in favour of Acton. Then came the fourth and final game to determine the tournament champions. Once again, the Acton Tan- ners faced the Afiton Ameri- cans. The outcome was simi- lar to their first meeting. The Tanners easily defeated Afton by a score of 6-1. Acton's scoring power was tremendous during the tournament with goals being scored by Anthony Kri (6), Daniel Kearns (6), Jordan Kuenzig (S), John Traversa (4), David Garvie (1), and Stephen Bennett (1). Assists were added by Jordan Kuenzig (4), Geoff Malcolm (3), John Traversa (3), Dan- iel Kearns (2), Anthony Kri (2), David Garvie (3), Stephen Bennett (1), and David Gardiner (1). Great credit must also be given to Acton's strong de- fensive corps, consisting of Matt Angell, David Moore, Abby Lyons, Braeden Halls and Andrew-Bruce. Their te- nacious play led to few shots being fired on net-minders Darren Pezzack and Spencer Vaness, who also turned out outstanding performances. "We are very pleased with the team's development" ex- pounded Tanners head coach Scott Malcolm, when asked" to comment. "Everyone is contributing and we are im- proving with every game". Acton 519-853-0539 Juveniles' music man By ANGELA TYLER The New Tanner He's the young man be- hind the music. When a goal is scored at the Acton Juve- nile Tanner home games, that's when 12 year old Chris Golden goes to work. He provides the music be- fore, during and after at all Juvenile Tanner home ~ games. The grade 7 student at St. Joseph's School started last year as a 'water boy' for the team, however he was a lit- tle too young for the job. His family is heavily involved with the team. Even though Chris attends all home games, he doesn't play hockey on a team and not sure if he wants to. He does think he might like to be- come a trainer for the Juve- niles. With his true love for music, he soon found him- self providing the music at last yéar's games. Unfortu- nately, not all the people in- volved with, the then Acton Sabres, were sure if they wanted music played. This year Chris has had a differ- ent response. "Tm getting requests from the players," Chris said noting his top request is 'Numb' by Courtney Love, "He also gets a lot of re- quests from the players' girl- friends," added Chris's dad Dan Golden, who is the manager of the team. Chris prefers rap music to country with some of his favourite groups being Ice Cube and Our Lady Peace. About 1 % hours before the game, the two-toned hair Chris with a Cheshire grin on his face, can be found in the sound room at the arena carefully picking and ar- ranging his selections for the day's game. During the game, look up to the top west corner of the arena here you will see a shadow of a per- son with a toque quickly moving around in the sound room. That's Chris. The team owns the stereo but all the music belongs to Chris. He has a wide choice of CD's and tapes. Although Chris is the music man, he does get some help from his mom Shirley. "Me and my mom make up a few tapes together," Chris said. Shirley is also the team statistician, prepares all the . programs, looks after the 50/ 50 draws and attends all home and away games. Thanks to her, Acton is one of the few teams that have a game program for each home game. "If the Guelph Storm could have a program, so could we," Shirley said. There is only one thing she doesn't do. "I draw the line at attending practices," Mrs. Golden declared. The Golden family is truly dedicated to the success of the Acton Juvenile.Tanners. Spending more than 20 hours a week attending games, practices, arranging transportation, doing the Stats and the muste, the fam~ ily has also been boarding one of the team who is from Erin. Top goal scorer for the team, Jim Corrigan has be- come an honorary member of the family and been like a brother with Chris. Corrigan has been attending Acton High School this past semes- ter. With his first season of being the Tanners DJ and seeing all the home games, how does Chris think the team will do? "I think they could go all the way," he said. However, dad was soon to correct him. Being a dedi- cated manager, Dan Golden said, "They will go all the way." , Minor Novices douse Erin The Acton Minor Novice Tanners doubled visiting Erin/Hillsburgh 6-3 on Sat- urday to take game one of the best-of-five OMHA playoffs. Both Stephen Bennett and Jessy Kuenzig scored twice for Acton. Alex Brake and David Carscadden had sin- gles. David Gardiner has three assists and Riley McGilloway, Carscadden, Michael McKeon and Stephen Bennett had single assists.
