Of the many motor oils on the market, many peo- ple prefer synthetic motor oils for the superior year-round protection and engine per- formance they deliver. Synthetic motor oils offer many advantages over con- ventional motor oils. Even though synthetics have been around for nearly three dec- ades, consumers are only just now becoming aware of these high-tech lubricants. The relationship between friction and engine horse- power is easy to perceive. Reduce friction, and an en- gine's pistons, gears and power train will operate more efficiently, producing more power. The greater the fric- tion, the greater the dissipa- tion of power. In order to pro- duce an equal amount of power with petroleum, one must expend a greater amount of energy (fuel ignition). Today, nearly every major oil company has a synthetic motor oil as part of its prod- uct offering. The wrong wax can be dis- astrous to your new car's gleaming shine. Many com- monly-used wax products can actually dull your new car's mirror finish. They use a com- bination of wax or silicone and a harsh abrasive polish which causes tiny scratches. The scratched paint can't reflect light as well as new paint. Numerous tests have dem- onstrated the increased fuel efficiency of synthetic lubri- cants. Because they are more re- sistant to viscosity break- down, synthetic motor oils last longer. Their thermal sta- bility offers better protection against deposit formation and sludge. Their oxidation resist- ance and resistance to burn- off results in lower oil con- sumption.
