By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner As their proud families and teachers watched, 86 Halton District School Board students, including five from the Acton area, received awards at the board's 16th annual celebration of student excellence in Oakville earlier this month. ; One student was selected from each Halton elementary and secondary school -- stu- dents who show exceptional qualities in at least two areas, including academics, voca- tional and athletic fields, self- improvement, community work, citizen and student lead- ership or specific criteria that reflect the school's unique priorities. "This is an excellent op- portunity to recognize the achievements and excellence of the young people in out schools today," said board chair Ethel Gardiner in a press release. "It's through the ongoing efforts of our dedicated staff, parents and community mem- bers, working co-operatively in partnership, that we are able to ensure Halton's stu- dents receive the quality edu- cation that is needed to meet the challenges of the future." Here's what the nominat- ing principals had to say about their students. Beth Clayton Beth is a Grade 8 honour student at McKenzie-Smith Bennett School who partici- pates in basketball, band, and student council. She works in the office and is a lunch Beth Clayton Trisha Bingeman Trisha, a Grade 5 student at Robert Little School, has consistently demonstrated a high commitment to her aca- demic studies and extra cur- ricular activities. She's an ex- cellent role model and is re- spected by her peers and younger students. Staff has enjoyed working with her at each grade level. Craig Harding Craig, a Grade 8 student at Brookville School, is a well- rounded student who demon- strates quiet, positive leader- ship on the volleyball and basketball courts and in the classroom. He's an active member of the student forum, assists each night with bus duties and joins willingly in school events like Mardi Gras. Craig has demonstrated ex- cellent academic results and is a role model for the entire school. Craig Harding James Mashinter James has been an out- standing contributor to cur- ricular and co-curricular pro- grams at Acton High School during the past five year. A high honour student, James has 'been extensively in- volved in music band pro- grams and school musical productions. He's been a leader and peer tutor with younger students and his highly admired by staff and fellow students. His citizen- ship, high energy and drive and dedication to excellence have earned him this award.
