THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2003 THE NEW TANNER 19 New. Gellert Centre will run $473,827 in the red Halton and Ward One Coun- cillor Rick Bonnette thinks the Town needs an expanded mar- keting plan for the new Gellert Community Centre in George- ~ town South --a facility that will run $473,827 in the red when it opens next year. During a recent briefing on the centre's budget and busi- ness plan, Bonnette said targeting users in one-third of Halton Hills is a program of exclusion, not inclusion, that could leave Speyside or Ballinafad residents "really not feel part of this...and it is a Halton Hills facility, built by the citizens of Halton Hills," he said. Recreation and Parks direc- tor Terry Alyman said they would target all potential us- ers, but added 75 per cent of the target population live within a ten-minute walk of the facility. Acton Councillor Clark Somerville, who repeatedly has questioned spending on the project, was not at the brief- ing, but afterward said as the "costs go up, my comfort level goes down." Operating costs of $1.4-mil- lion and revenues of $936,664, give the centre a $473,827 loss, to which Council had al- ready earmarked $189,000. The balance will come from a number of areas including a 10 TOWN DIGEST per cent surcharge on user fees and summer closure of the Georgetown Indoor Pool. Rural insurance break Some rural residents may reap big insurance savings thanks to the Halton Hills fire department that passed an in- surance organization's test of its ability to get water to rural areas without municipal water, with flying colours. The department's new tanker and crew were tested last month as they provided an uninterrupted flow of water to a pumper at a simulated seri- ous fire requiring large amounts of water to control and extinguish. Chief of Operations, Larry Brassard said the accreditation by the Insurers Advisory Or- ganization, is a "milestone for our department." Local property owners are urged to call their insurance broker/agent to see if they of- fer reduced rates to customers ina community that has earned the superior tanker shuttle ac- creditation. Rural waste survey Do rural residents want Halton to collect their garbage and are they willing to pay for Per-bag garbage fee encourage road dumping To the editor, In your paper of August 21/03 there was a piece on Halton Region considering a per-bag garbage fee. In my opinion, if this goes through, Halton Re- gion will be finding garbage bags in ditches on the back roads of Acton in the future. Thank you for your time. Yours truly, Norman Foote, Acton MOD squad raises $600 for costumes Acton's 'The Dance Inn' Competition Dancers, their moms, dads, grandmas, sib- » lings and friends (MOD * Squad), grabbed sponges, buckets, hoses and power washers, and headed for the IGA parking lot where they scrubbed and polished 75 vehicles shiny clean on Sat- urday, August23. The girls voted the big white: '65 Cadillac the 'coolest car' through the wash, Kurtis from IGA gets top vote for 'cutest driver', with the 'backstreet boy' in the black jeep following a close sec- ond. We can't forget the really big stars of the day -- John Van Dam and the rest of the staff at IGA. Thanks to their support, we were able to raise over $600 with the car wash, bake and craft ta- ble. All money raised goes toward the Dance Team's competition costumes, entry fees, and team uniforms. Tamara Rostom said she first thought, "there goes my summer," when Dina in- sisted that she would take the certification test during their trip to Florida, and not wait until next year, but then she "fell in love" on her first ocean dive. Diving is one of the new life skills Rostom and hus- band, Joergen Mouridsen, are teaching their family in preparation for their sail around the world on a cata- maran. They plan to set sail next fall, and let the trade winds blow them on a lifetime trip. the service on their tax bill? A Regional survey being mailed before September 10 will collect opinions for poli- ticians and staff as they look at waste management. For an average rural prop- erty assessed at $311,000, weekly garbage pickup would add approximately $120 to the tax bill. Halton's decision to close its tural recycling depots, replac- ing them with bi-weekly roadside Blue Box collection in rural areas of Halton Hills, Milton and Burlington next year, will add $40 to the tax bill ofa rural property with an average assessed value. CRITE How about unregistered guns? To the editor, The headline in the Star reads "Police rely on gun reg- istry" (Aug 31 headline). It also quotes Wendy Caulkier -- the anti-gun group that says it received no government Rural residents are invited to bring questions and concerns to staff at two open houses on September 16, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., at the Civic Centre, and from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Limehouse Memorial Hall on September 17. Yeah -- right on Wendy -- it's good to know that only legally owned guns concern the po- lice. Unregistered ones, apparently, are of no concern. As far as the Star riding to the defence of the Liberals -- would anyone expect anything else? The Liberals have not only created a nutty gun regis- try that does no good, and it's only cost $1 billion or so. Sounds good to me -- sounds like its working for law-abid- ing people, too. Take the case of Jonathan Logan -- if the police used this gun registry then it would be logical to assume that this could not possibly happen. Please go to the web site -- i tells the story better than I can --and it's a TOTAL disgrace. The web site is www.helpjonathan.com. What is worse, in my opin- ion, is that law-abiding citizens may not trust the police anymore as a result of the gun registry. Pity.
