Trees dedicated to loved ones are broken down by vandals About seven years ago, the Rotary Club of Acton introduced their Rotary Park Memorial Tree program in which indi- _viduals and families were invited to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one. The program proved to be so popular that three dedications have been com- pleted to date and about 20 trees planted in and around Rotary Park, which bor- ders Fairy Lake. Over the years, three of the trees did not survive the winter and have been re- "placed. Worse still, five trees have been vandalized. Two were broken off and destroyed this past weekend. The two vandalized trees had been replanted this summer, to replace two that hadn't sur- vived the harsh winter. These trees, maintained through a part- nership between the Acton Rotary Club and the Town of Halton Hills, serve as a living memory of all those whose names are etched on three brass plaques mounted on an imposing rock, which sits at the base of Elmore Drive. The individuals and families who pur- chased a tree were invited to attend a dedication ceremony at the park, at which time a lottery system was used to assign a tree to the deceased. A short cer- emony, conducted: by Rotarian and Minister Emrys Jenkins, accompanied each of the three dedications. It is disturbing that mindless vandal- ism has affected two families who chose to dedicate these trees to a loved one, said Rotary member Doug Fread. There's also a monetary loss, as the Ac- ton Rotary Club must again replace two trees. v Fluids Qit, Transmission, Brake, Power Steering, Windshield Washer, Battery, Antifreeze /Wiper Blades VTires Brake Ughts WINTER Now is the time for a Winter Safety Check of your vehide A complete check foley can save a lot of hassles tomorrow, so come see us for a complete inspection of these automotive systems: VBrakes W/Battery /Radiator Hese vBelis Tread & Pressure VLights Head gm Tor Signals Includes Oil & Filter up eS 5 litres 10W30 Assocation of North eric' Ig ene one Sen lof e hers oentie Spt ae Shed Automotive Technion TOTH MOTORS 12 Guelph St., Acton 519-853-1840 x ?
