Only incumbents Les Foote and David McCrae remain to continue the projects begun over the past term and they hold their seats by acclamation. They are the councillors representing Wards 1 and 2, the portion of the amal- gamated municipality that used to be Guelph Town- ship. They have not been opposed. in, at.least three elections. Newly elected mayor Clint Martin admitted the results were nothing to cel- ebrate. "I think (defeated mayor) David (Adsett) lost it more than I won it," he said. "It's no slight on David. When you' re there nine years you become a CLINT MARTIN Martin new mayor Gibson- Smye and White on Council target." The voters must have agreed since they cast TERESSA _ GIBSON-SMYE CHRIS WHITE 1,463 ballots for Martin, a retired construction worker and political neo- phyte, and only 1,201 for Adsett the current warden of Wellington County and the candidate who topped the polls when he was first-elected nine years ago. In Ward 3, the lower half of former Eramosa Township including Rockwood and Eden Mills, incumbent Doug Breen lost to Teressa Gibson-Smye, the candi- date who lost her bid to be mayor in 2000. Breen received 424 votes as LANDING Rockwood FISHERMAN'S compared with 444 for Gibson-Smye. In Ward 4, the northern portion of old Eramosa Township, inexperience again ruled the day as Chris White picked up 419 votes as compared with 210 for returning councillor David Hindley and 137 for newcomer Larry Stafford, an avowed GETA (Guelph Eramosa Taxpayers' As- sociation) supporter. Martin and Adsett both said the people had spo- ken. Looking at voter turnout of 29.5 per cent however, it is obvious only a fraction of the 9,017 eligible to do so voiced their opinion. Lack of candidate par- ticipation seems to have been an unusual facet of this election as three can- didates ignored opportunities to sell themselves to the voters. An all candidates meet- ing was held in Eden > Mills last week specifi- cally to let voters hear their candidates for Ward 3. Martin and Gibson- Smye both failed to attend. Separate School Trustee candidate Alan McDonald did not attend any of the all candidates meetings yet still man- aged to receive a respectable show of sup- port although Nick Chiarelli defeated him. places a wreath in remembrance of fallen township serv- icemen during Saturday's Remembrance Day services.
