Eden Mills bridge deteriorating - Public works calls for replacement BY MAGGIE PETRUSHEVSKY The New Tanner A provincially-required inspection of culverts and bridges in Guelph/ Eramosa has called for the THE CLASSIFIEDS small ads ce ais replacement of Eden Mills' second bridge after four of its steel beams were found to have deteriorated seriously. In a report to council Monday, Public Works manager Larry Van Wyck said the report called for the dropping of the weight limit on the bridge to 5 tonne, and the total re- placement of the north bridge by the former mill within the year. The village's more southerly bow string bridge was replaced sev- eral years ago after a multi-year battle with resi- dents. They. feared turn the road into a speed- way and destroy the peace and safety of the commu- nity. The lowered weight will prohibit service vehicles like snow plows, fire trucks and school buses from crossing the bridge, Van Wyck said. He wants to check with Wellington County con- cerning some of the engineering documents used with the first bridge before spending the money to duplicate the work for this bridge. The cost of the new bridge will be part of the 2004 capital budget, he said. The Ontario Public Transportation and High- way Improvement Act requires all municipalities to inspect their bridges and culverts every two years. The work was completed in November. The report also called for repairs within the year to barriers on a bridge on In- dian Trail and another on the Seventh Line near Sideroad 20, replacement of a culvert in Guelph Township west of Guelph, and repairs to the decking on the bridge over the rail- way tracks on the Sixth Line east of Rockwood. replacing the bridge would BRIDGE WORK: Service a vehicles such as fire trucks, snowplows and school buses can no longer cross the bridge over the Eramosa River in the heart of Eden Mills, shown here. The bridge is deteriorating and a five tonne weight limit has been imposed. Try a Tanner ad -- it pays!
