12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2004 AHS Bearcats spike wins Acton Bearcat volleyball teams spiked their way into the New Year with wins in both the senior and junior girls' divisions, downing Kings' Christian College of Oakville. The seniors, with a strong team effort, im- proved their record to two wins and three losses beat- ing their opposition 25-13, 25-10. Good set selection by setter, Katy Boychuk coupled with excellent de- fensive coverage by Amy Boileau and April Thomas gave the senior ladies their second win in a row. They defeated Queen Elizabeth Park before the Christmas Break, 25-15, 21-25, 15-6. The Junior Bearcats ex- tended their record to 4 and 1. Having lost to White Oaks before the break, they rebounded to defeat QEP and followed that up with a win against KCC, 27-25, 23-25 and 16-14. Quick action by Melissa Bigg at the net along with strong defensive play by middles Jennifer Wieck and Alison Minto and good serving by Ally Martineau put the team ahead in the first game. A lack of communication in the second game put the pressure on the girls to win the third but they came to- gether and. won the third. Atom AE Tanners fold at Tecumseh tourney Denny's Atom AE Tan- ners travelled to Tecumseh, outside Windsor, for their first AE rated tournament of the season, with high expec- tations. But they did not achieve the results they had hoped for, winning only one of their four games, they ended up as one of only two teams not to make the play- offs. The team was missing Charlie Browes, Jeff Curry and head coach Bill Curry for the tournament, with several other players bat- tling the flu. In their first game against Petrolia, Acton outshot Petrolia 14-12, but lost 2-0. Colton Wiens made some good saves, both Petrolia goals came on the power play. The Tanners were outshot 28-5, as Jesse Hill faced a barrage of Strathroy shots over the first two periods. Acton's five shots on goal were a season-low, even fewer than they managed against 'A' teams in their previous tournament. Ac- ton's goal was scored by Dylan Britton, assisted by Mitchell Brake. Things improved on the second day, as the team put together a good effort to beat Wallaceburg 5-2. Wyatt Martin was the big gun for Acton, moving up from de- fence to play left wing, and recording his first three goals of the season for the hat-trick. The other goals were scored by Eric Butson and Mitchell Brake. Assists went to Adam Duval (2), Jon Porty (2), Butson, Brake, Roger Kirkness and Britton. Colton Wiens went the distance in net for Ac- ton. The Tanners went to their fourth game needing a win to make the playoffs, but could not do it, losing 2-1 to Mooretown. Colton Wiens held Acton in the game with some great saves, the whole team played well, but Mooretown was a tough team and eliminated the Tanners. Adam Duval had the goal, assisted by Roger Kirkness and Eric Butson. The team returned home to play Fergus on Jan. 4, and beat the Highlanders once again, this time 4-1, as they outshot Fergus 29-7. Colton Wiens played well in net, the only Fergus goal came on a lucky bounce off an Acton defender. Eric Butson had two goals for Acton, singles went to Mitchell Brake and Jon Porty. Assists went to Clay- ton Black (2), Dylan Britton, Jeff Curry, Roger Kirkness and Charlie Browes. The team has no more scheduled home games, they are looking forward to do- ing well in the upcoming playoffs. Playoff schedules, when available will be posted at www.omha.net. Novice BB Tanners excel at Midland The Carquest Acton Nellis Construction Novice BB Tan- ners travelled to Midland for an 'A' tournament on Dec. 29 and 30, and did well, but did not win. The Tanners started off with a 4-2 victory over Aurora, scoring two power-play goals, while Mason Overland stopped 10 Aurora shots. Ryan Dunlevy and T.J. Baker scored two goals each, assists went to Dunlevy, Billy Mowat, Walter Kirkness and Callum Bowles. Next was the skills compe- tition, highlighted' by Overland winning the goaltender shootout. He got some help from Dunlevy, as Dunlevy was the shooter against the other goalie in overtime. Carter Ebbinge fin- ished second out of eight skaters in the stick handling. The second game against host Midland, was the Tanners win 8-1, outshooting Midland 18-4. Dunlevy had two goals and three assists. Other scor- ing came from Michael Evans, (2G), Damian Ewing (2G, 1A), Carter Ebbinge (G), T. J. Baker (G, A), Mason Galway (A), David Bickers (2A), Michael Fatrdla (A), Walter Kirkness (A), Brodie MacFarlane (A). The Tanners went into their third game against Orillia needing a win or a tie to ad- vance to the finals. They started slowly, recording no shots on goal in the first pe- riod, and fell behind 1-0. They began to pick up the pace, re- cording 16 shots over the second two periods, eventu- ally out-shooting Orillia 16-8. Mason Overland made some good saves to keep Acton in the game, but the opposing goalie turned away everything Acton could muster. It appeared Ryan Dunley tied the game with a hard shot with four minutes remaining, but the referee ruled the shot hit the crossbar, and play continued. The game ended 1-0 Orillia, but the Tanners had played very well. Orillia went on to win the tournament. The team returned home on the third to play Woolwich, but they had left their energy in Midland, and played a some- what flat game, losing 4-2. Overland made 16 saves, which the Tanners managed a season- low five shots on the Woolwich net. Dunlevy and Kirkness each had a goal and an assist, Baker and Bowles had the other as- sists. Finally on Dec. 4, the team took on their parents, and (of course), soundly defeated them. The last home game of the season is this Sunday, Jan. 11 at | p.m. after another tourna- ment on Jan. 10.
