PeeWee 'A' Tanners fashion convincing victories over Oakville and Brampton Coach Scott Malcolm told his players that with a consistent work ethic they would, by the end of the season, be able to beat the large centre teams in their league and be guaranteed a winning result against Brampton. True to his word, the Acton Tanners Heartland Shipping Sup- plies Peewee 'A' team finished their 2003-2004 regular season with con- vincing victories over both Oakville and Brampton. In their 6-4 victory over Oakville on Saturday night, the Tanners were led by Jessy Kuenzig who scored three goals. Linemates Brandyn McCarthy and Bradley Kri each notched singles, with Kri adding three assists and McCarthy two to com- plete a nine point night for the line. Scott Weber, a leading candidate for the most improved player on the Tanners' squad this year, scored the other goal. Kuenzig's opening effort was a goal of delicious skill as the centreman showed great patience in Le waiting for the Oakville goaltender to commit be- fore he deftly guided the puck between his legs. However, it was his second goal at the 5:31 mark of the third period that was most significant as it came but 10 seconds after Oakville had tied the score 4-4. This decisive response by the Tanners took the wind out of the sails of the visitors, who were unable to mount a consistent at- tack thereafter. Their fate was sealed when Kuenzig notched his third goal into an empty Oakville net with 20 seconds remaining. Joss Warren was a standout in goal, register- ing the victory, especially in the first period when Oakville controlled the play and could have easily expanded upon an early 2- O lead. The victory against Oakville gave the Tanners a 2-1 victory in the season ~ series. Tn Sunday afternoon's 3- 1 victory over Brampton, Acton put in an even more comprehensive effort. The Tanners were superior in every facet of the game offensively, defensively and in goal. The defence, which at times struggled against Oakville the night before, was superb against the larger and more physi- cal visitors with the five man defensive unit of David Tysoe, Scot Hofland, David Elop, Liam Robertson and Taylor McNabb exhibiting tremendous composure and confidence in their own end. The Tanners' scoring was handled by Riley McGilloway, Dylan Creasey and McCarthy all putting in particularly feisty performances, breaking up several Brampton rushes in the visitors' own end. Warren again took the victory in goal, making several outstanding saves particularly in the second period when the Tanners were awarded three straight penalties. At the time of writing, the Tanners were awaiting word as to who their first opponent will be in the OMHA playoffs. YEOMAN EFFORT: Goal tender Joss Warren, one of Tanner Major PeeWee's Dynamic tandem, was heroic in Mooretown Tourney but couldn't stab this North London chance. --Chuck Tysoe photo
