THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2004 THE NEW TANNER 5 Po E [SS Fens pS --_ SNOWY BLASTS: Bone-chilling gale force winds, which often caused white- outs, swirled around this week as winter returned to the area. This construction site on Wallace Ave. was busy despite conditions. Winter returns to area with snow, heavy winds The New Tanner advertising manager, Marie Shadbolt was planting tulip and hyacinth bulbs in last Saturday's balmy weather. There wasn't a bit of frost in the ground and the earth turned over easily, she said. Monday morning she was huddled in a parka, cleaning the snow and frost from her car, only a few feet away from the flowerbeds: where she had planted the flower bulbs on Saturday. The good old Canadian winter, which took a sabbatical for a couple of weeks returned with a vengeance on Monday, sending snow and bitterly cold winds to buffet us. Roads were slippery and those who gardened and enjoyed walking with ~ light sweaters and coats are now encased in winter gear -- boots, parkas, scarves and hats -- as they faced gale-force winds loaded with snow. Fortunately, Old Sol, which intermit- tently had hidden its face behind clouds, kept reappearing and flooded the are with sunshine bracing spirit for the wrath yet to come. Children rejoiced. At last they had snow to play with their sleighs, toboggans and skis Santa had left under the Christmas tree. S Those who hate winter can find some consolation in the fact that the first day of Spring on the calendar is only 74 day: away. - The festive season has drawn to a close, now it's reality time. The weather has been upside down for a couple of weeks, but now the party's over. It was good while it lasted. The New Year's Levee was very well attended. Adam Timoon was as good as his billing; he is a very versatile entertainer.
