12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2004 Bearcats down Aquinas, Trinity maintain first place in league The Acton Bearcats jun- ior volleyball team maintained its first place standing in the Volpe Di- vision of the Halton volleyball league, down- ing St Thomas Aquinas and Holy Trinity. Kim Trumpa_ and Jennifer Wieck demon- strated consistency in serving their way into a lead to win the first game against the Oakville team 25-23. The team came out strongly in the second game and played a much more aggressive style, uti- lizing the attack of Danielle Soderholm and Jenn Wieck again to defeat their opponents 25-20. Tuesday, they traveled to Holy Trinity where they met a determinedly defen- sive team. Holy Trinity seemed to return any attack the Bearcats hit them with and came out ahead in the first game 25 -- 16. The Bearcats rallied in the sec- ond game, coming back to match their opponents strong defensive game with good net play by Melissa Bigg and attack by Caroline Shaw and Alison Minto to win 25-18. They play Christ the King at home on Thursday. The senior team has had a tough season to date. With only seven players on the team they have taken most of their opponents to three games. Their last two outings were no exception. In their first game with St Thomas Aquinas, they came out on the attack and defeated them 25-20: Acton's opponents matched them in the sec- ond game winning 25-20. Inconsistent serving and team errors in the third game left them in the loss column losing 15-6, Tues- day saw the same results although the team demon- strated better team play. They showed a lot of hus- tle and better defence but were not able to sustain their attack. Cartwright drew the Chargers logo --a stylized lightning bolt with a face and a hickey stick -- which was enhanced by Acton's Stephanie Azzopardi whose brother is a House League player. For his efforts, Cartwright won a team jer- sey sporting his logo with his number -- 5 -- on it. Playdowns Midgets open one game lead over Fergus team By John Archibald The Acton Galvcast Tan- ner "BB" Midgets travelled to Fergus Monday night and edged the Green Ma- chine 3 -- 2 to take a one game lead in the best of five OMHA playdown. The Midget squad played one of their best games of the year getting a solid effort from all team members. Acton came out strong early in the first period keeping the play in the Fergus end for the first four minutes of play. A costly penalty to Kurtis McArthur for slashing forced Acton to play shorthanded. Fergus quickly capitalized, scor- ing just over a minute into the penalty. Acton never gave up and fought back with an unas- sisted goal by Eric Goll. In the second period, Acton kept the pressure on when Kyle McDonald added Acton's second marker at 13:42 with a two-way passing play from Tim Pembleton and Greg Boughton. Twelve seconds later Mark Boy- cott slid the puck past the Fergus goalie in what proved to be the winner on a pass from Brandon Ceccotti. The Galvcast Midgets played a solid game defen- sively for the remainder of the game. However, Fergus fought back to get within one goal at 6:25 to keep the game interesting. Simon Sharples made some key saves in goal late in the game 'to assist Ac- ton in holding onto the win. The referees for this se- ries are neutral (out of Town) and officiated one of the best games this sea- son. The second game of this series will be played in Acton on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The fourth game if necessary will be played in Acton on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. We encourage you to come out and support our local midget team and watch some exciting fast paced hockey.
