Acton started the game very flat, perhaps as they ad- justed to new lines, and in a couple of cases, new posi- tions, and were out-shot 15-2 over the first period. Goaltender Jesse Hill was spectacular in net for Acton, stopping all 15 shots on a variety of break-aways, re- bounds and other good scoring chances. The Tanners finally came alive in the second, but the game remained scoreless un- til early in the third, when defenceman Tyler Christopher scored unas- sisted from the point, on a shot that bounced in off a Fergus defender. Christopher also led the Tanners with five hits in the game. Acton remained in control until five minutes remained in the third, when Fergus However, the Tanners responded on the back of scored to tie it. Fergus scored again with 2:12 remaining, and it appeared that Hill's heroics had been for nothing. But Roger Kirkness tied it just seventeen seconds later from Mitchell Brake, then Eric Butson scored the win- ner from a sharp angle with 1:08 left in the game, also assisted by Brake: The Tanners were out-shot 25-12 in the game, after domi- nating the first game, and the season series, so coach Bill Curry has some work to do to get them back on track. It was fortunate that Jesse Hill played his best game of the season, which allowed the Tanners to steal the win. The third game in the se- ries is this Saturday at 4:30 in Acton, a win for the Tan- ners and they advance to the next round. Atoms start playoff with solid 3-1 victory The Denny's Atom AE Tanners started their OMHA playoff run with a solid 3-1 victory over Fergus at home on Jan., 17. The Tanners out- shot Fergus 25-9, as Colton Wiens was solid in net for Acton. Kirin Rice opened the scoring for Acton midway through the first, driving home Roger Kirkness' re- bound after a shot from the point by Adam Duval. Fergus tied it early in the second, but Kirkness scored the winner on the power-play two minutes later, assisted by Charlie Browes. Dylan Britton got the insurance marker mid- way through the third, after a scramble in front of the Fergus net. team down 2-0 to Saugeen Shores on a power play 30 seconds into the first overtime man short entering the overtime session. The visitors The Acton Tanners Heartland Shipping Supplies Peewee "A' team face an uphill battle in their second round of the OMHA playoffs after losing the first two games in the best of five series to Saugeen Shores. In Saturday's series opener, the Tanners visited Port Elgin and dropped a 6-3 decision to the hometown side, The Tanners held a 1-0 lead at the end of the firstperiod on a goal by Bradley Kriassisted by Riley McGilloway and Brandyn McCarthy, were tied 2-2 at the end of two periods and 3-3 one-and-a half min- utes into the third period. A series of costly mistakes by the Tanners in their own end in the last ten minutes allowed Saugeen Shores to score three unanswered goals to secure the victory. McCarthy, on assists from Jessy Kuenzig and Kri, scored the Tanners' second goal in the second period, and Kri scored the Tanners' third and his sec- ond of the game in the third. Kuenzig again picked up the assist. Joss Warren took the loss in goal. In game two on Sunday at the Acton Arena, the Tanners lost a heartbreaker, when the visitors scored period to take a 4-3 victory. Again the Tanners opened the scoring, this time midway through the second period, when Dylan Creasey converted a fine pass from Scott Weber to score shorthanded. Weber's te- naciousness along the boards during the penalty kill ultimately led the creation ofa two-on-one situation in the neutral zone and was able to pass to Creasey, who scored despite having a Saugeen Shores defender draped all over him. _ The Tanners were able to make their 1-0 lead hold up through to the end of the second period due to much greater commitment than they displayed in game one to defensive play in their own end and fine goaltending by Jason Shaw. In the third period the visitors equalized after McCarthy lost the puck after being slashed by one of the Saugeen forwards. Despite the obvious infrac- tion, no call was made and the unfortunate turnover allowed the visitors to create a two-on-one situation in front of the Acton net, on which they were able to capitalize and even the score. defenceman David Tysoe's tremendous efforts. Tysoe, whose open ice body checks in both games helped to slow down the Saugeen forwards, this time used his speed and rushing skill to work around the Saugeen defense before sliding the puck through the goaltender's legs. The Tanners' lead, however, was short-lived when three minutes later Saugeen equal- ized for a fine three-way passing play. The visitors then took their first lead of the game just over a minute later when again a tumover in the Tanner end, caused by an obvious holding infraction by a Saugeen forward, was not called. However, the Tanners' resiliency was evident when, after an Acton timeout called by coach Scott Malcolm, McCarthy scored on fine passes from Kri and Kuenzig with just 35 seconds left in the game and the Tanner net empty in favour of an extra attacker. With just 2.4 seconds left in regulation time, ref- eree Ken Chaysson called a hooking penalty on Tanners' captain Kuenzig, and despite howls of pro- test from the Tanners' bench, the home side was left a needed only 31 seconds to capitalize on the man ad- vantage, sending the Tanners' fans home disappointed and the Tanner team down two games to none. The loss in game two on Sunday overshadowed aremarkable performance by Creasey who not only scored the Tanners' opening goal, but also recorded four block shots, recklessly throwing his body in front of the opposing slapshots. He also created countless turnovers for the Tanners in the opposi- tion end due to his forechecking. The Tanners, despite being down in the series, can take some consolation in the fact they have out- played their opposition during the first two periods of each game, and the third period let-down in the first two games of the series is something that they can overcome if all fifteen players are prepared to show the same level of commitment as Creasey dis- played in game two. Game three is in Acton on Saturday at 5:50 p.m. The Tanners would like to see, and are clearly de- serving of, your support.
