The 34th annual event -- re- portedly the oldest Peewee tournament in Ontario -- fea- tured 28 games with 17 teams in two divisions, including two Acton teams. In the Bill Waites champion- ship game on Sunday, Meadowvale blanked Palgrave 13- 0 for the big trophy. In the John Toebes division final, also on Sunday, Meadowvale # 53 edged Oakville 2-1 in sudden death overtime for the crown. Acton's Kerwin McPhail, a founding member of the tour- nament that began as an Acton Legion event, dropped the first puck on Friday. In the opening game, Acton's R&M Construction handed Orangeville Gauthiers Crew a 4-1 loss, with two goals and an assist from Brandon Bennett. Einmann had the lone goal, with help from Bennett, in R&M's second game, a 6-1 loss to Meadowvale. McMeekin, Stefan Smelsky and Travis Wright had singles in R&M's third game, a 5-3 loss to Pelham. Ana Marie Smelsky had a pair of assists and Einmann, Bennett, Justin Bravo and Matthew Mills had single assists. Acton's second tournament entry, Acton Subway, was fea- tured in the Waites division consolation final, a 9-1 win for Barrie. Michael Lavigne scored two goals, with help from Brendan Pickett and Joe Frechette, in Subway's first game, a 3-2 loss to Orangeville Bourge White on Friday. TNT Tornadoes downed Acton Subway 6-2 on Satur- day with an unassisted single from Frechette and a single from Lavigne with help from Justin Bradley. Subway goalie Andrew Cheeseman was fast and sharp, earning a shutout in a 5-0 win over Oakville, that featured a pair of goals from Lavigne, and singles from Brendan Pickett, Alex Barry and Aedan Flynn. Michael Brown and Joe Aitken each had two assists and Curtis Howson and Tyler Zuidema had single helpers. In the Waites division con- solation final, Alex Barry scored Subway's lone goal, with help from Aitken and Frechette in a 9-1 loss to Barrie. An American team, from Palos Heights, near Chicago, was the furthest from home and had to settle for one win and two losses. Novice Selects down Cambridge Hawks The Novice Select Chargers travelled to Cambridge to face off against the Cambridge Hawks on Jan. 31 and came away 3-2 winners. Captain Evan Oulton's line of Quinn Harding and Ian Thompson led the charge with Oulton's unassisted goal seven minutes into the first period, to put the Chargers ahead 1-0. The Hawks picked up the pace and a tripping penalty late in the first period put the Charg- ers on the powerplay. In the second period, the line of Josh Kalbhenn, Nick Molinaro and Chris Porty skated hard, Kalbhenn pick- ing up a goal assisted by Molinar to bring the Chargers lead to 2-0. Just two minutes later, they coun- tered with a goal to break the Charger shutout and narrow the score to 3-1. With 5:10 re- maining in regulation time, the Hawks scored another to bring the score to 3-2. However, the Chargers hung on to take the victory. Netminder Mitch Godak played awesome, continually stopping scoring chances by the Hawks. Defencemen Matt Fritz, Logan McNabb, Dylan Schouten and Joe Romhanyi successfully kept the puck out of the Chargers end. A game well played by all the Chargers.
