Peewee AE TAnners poised in second for playoff run The R&M Construction Acton Tanners Peewee AE team is currently in a battle for a spot in the finals of the Tri-County playoffs and they have played very well in recent games sitting alone in second place. On Tuesday of last week, The Tanners played in Arthur and came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory. Ben Hess was chosen the first star of the game for his fabulous goaltending performance, making some memorable saves when the game was in the final moments. Jamie Campbell opened the scoring with a one timer on a nice pass from Adam Amato with the other assist going to Jessie Mortensen. Nathan Bennett scored the winner in the third ona pass from Ryan Faber. Saturday's 4-1 Tanner win was a showdown against playoff-leading Woolwich in Acton. Jamie Campbell and Drew Backman assisted the Tanner's first goal scored by a wide-open Adam Amato. The second goal came when Ellis Lavallee kicked a pass to Nathan Bennett in front of the net. Nathan then roofed a backhand into the top mesh. Matt Kutasienski scored the third goal from Josh McDonnell and Cole ' Fricker, arriving just in time 'to bury the puck over the sprawling goaltender. Drew closed out the scor- ing with a hard, low shot from the point assisted by Jamie Campbell and Cole Fricker. Dirk Van Soelen played well in net making many crucial saves early with his lightning quick glove hand. yy Peewee team celebrates after winning gold at a one-day tournament in Arthur. The club never allowed the opposing team one goal - submitted photo Tanner Peewee AE team Arthur tourney champs Leap year day proved memorable for the R&M Con- struction Acton Tanners Peewee AE team when they travelled to Arthur for a one- day tournament, returning as Tournament Champions. An impressive defensive and goaltending effort throughout the tournament enabled the Tanners to win three games without surrendering a goal. The Tanners first game was a 7-0 win against even- tual "B" pool runner up Glanbrook. Cole Fricker opened the scoring in the first on a partial breakaway started by a pass from Luke Van Dinther. On the same shift Jake Hnatiw arrived late converting a rebound to a goal with assists to Cole and Matt K. One shift later the same trio scored again when Cole took a punishing hit as he passed to Matt in front for a one timer, the other assist went to Jake. The fourth goal was scored by Josh assisted by line mates Nathan and Ryan on a nifty three way passing play. Ellis scored a great goal, cutting in and stuffing it passed the goalie with assists to Adam and Drew. Ryan scored on a pass from Josh assisted by Nathan with the final goal being scored by Adam on a good pass from Jamie. Ben made a good save. The second game was a great contest against arch ri- vals Fergus, which Acton won 3-0. The tone of the game was set early when Ryan sent a physical mes- sage to Fergus' largest player in our zone. Ryan then turned up ice and took a fantastic pass from Nathan beating the defender one on one and scoring the game's first goal. Acton was outshot 14-7 in the game. However Dirk was solid in net, turning away a few challenging shots and one great blocker save on a breakaway. Josh and Jack Matthews scored two empty net goals in the last minute from long range with assists to Luke, Cole and Josh. The Tournament final pit- ted the Tanners against Meaford in a late afternoon game that was played fol- lowing a tough mini stick inter-squad game. Despite a long break Acton played very strong in the scoreless first period then getting their legs going in the second, took the lead on a breakaway goal scored by Adam on a great lead pass from Drew. Adam, chosen player of the game, scored the second goal late'in the same period on a one timer fed by a pass from the corner by Ellis. Jamie picked up the other assist. The third period was physical and Acton held the lead by wearing down. the under-manned opponents through hustle and strong team play. Ben Hess played well in the game making a crucial blocker save on a breakaway, holding on to the shutout and zero tournament goals against despite the fate tempting comments made by some of his teammates on the bench. Tanners one away from finals The Carquest Acton/ Nellis Construction Novice BB Tanners are one point away from the OMHA fi- nals after defeating Erin 5-0 on Feb. 24. They also con- tinued Tri-County play on the 29th, losing 3-2 to Brampton. The Tanners beat Erin on the strength of good defence, allowing only five shots on goalie Mason Overland, who earned his ninth shut-out of the season. The scoring was dtstributed well, with goals scored by T.J. Baker, Callum Bowles, David Bickers, Carter Ebbinge and Walter Kirkness. Kirkness had two assists, singles went to Michael Fatrdla and Damian Ewing. The Tanners lost a close game to Brampton, falling behind 2-0 before tying it 2- 2, then losing 3-2. Kirkness scored both goals, one as- sisted by Michael Evans, the other unassisted. The Tanners meet Erin again on March 2, a win or tie will allow the Tanners to take the series. If the Tan- ners win, they will face Fergus in the final. The Tanners are 3-0 against Fergus this year, shy s% winning by scores of 13-3, 6-1 and 5-3. They only outshot Fergus 61-48; goaltending was the major difference in the series. Atoms back in Tri- County win column Denny's Atom AE Tanners shook off a disappointing OMHA elimination, and re- turned to winning in Trio-County play. The Tanners took on Hespeler on Feb. 24, and beat the Shamrocks 3-1, with Jesse Hill playing the.
