10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MARCH 11, 2004 Our next trip to Rama will be on Wednesday, March 31. Please call Ruth at 853-5124 if you wish to go. Ron Patterson won the 50/ 50 draw last week. Don't for- get, if you don't visit the centre and put your loonie in the draw you can't win. There was a mistake in the article last week about the Interior Decorating Show. It will be on Tuesday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. Don't forget to mark this on your calendar. A great show with lots of fresh and interesting ideas for the home. There will be no computer instruction for this week, but Lonnie will be back on Tues- day, March 16. There has been great inter- est in our GST (Goods, Service, Talents) Auction and we would like to thank all the local merchants, businesses and friends who have do- CHIROPODIST/EOOT SPECINLIST DEANNA WILSON B.Se,, 0.08, Thompron Wellness Contre 25 Main Strast North Acton, Ontario 171 1¥9 (519) 853-3460 © FOOT/HAIL CARE © SPORT INJURIES © PEDIATRICS DIABETIC/ARTARITIC FOOT CONDITIONS © CUSTOM ORTHOTICS AND FOOTWEAR HONE VISITS SENIORS' Rec. The Drama Club held their fist meeting on Monday, March 8. If anyone is inter- ested Dave Dobson is the person to contact. There are still a few tickets left for Stage West on Wednesday, March 17 to see "The Foursome." All the tickets are sold for the Saint Patrick's dinner and it looks like a very entertain- ing evening, with lots of Irish food on the menu and the toe tapping music of the Oakville Harmonica Players. The next card night is Wednesday, March 17 at 7:45 p-m. An evening of fun and lunch is included. We are trying to start a Bridge Club if there is enough interest. If you enjoy Bridge, please put your name and phone number on the sign up sheet at the Centre. There are many activities at the centre to help keep sen- iors fit and healthy. To mention just a few we have "Easy Does It" on Tuesday afternoons under the guid- ance of Liz Cooper who also teaches "Line Dancing" on Wednesdays. Arlene Bruce tuns a fitness class (not too strenuous) on Wednesday mornings, and there is also "Carpet Bowling" on Mon- day afternoons, and, of course, in the morning Darts. And I have just heard (through the grapevine) that the ladies won. Judging by the merriment I heard earlier, everyone was having a great time. Please come and check us out. I can guarantee you will find something you will en- joy, and it sure beats sitting inside watching the television and the snow falling. e fres Traqy Mitchell D.D. The Omnipotent busy- bodies just don't quit! We elect a council to run Halton Hills' business and we get a panel of moral watchdogs intent on imposing their per- sonal preferences and politically correct ideals upon everyone. It is a poor situation when, in a so- called free society, one man's morality becomes every man's law. The arrogant remarks of. those puffed up, full-of- themselves spokespersons are unbelievable! Jane Fogal said, "the veterans _ deserve to be as healthy as everyone else?" Could she actually be- lieve that she has a right to tell veterans, who have sur- vived the hell of war AND the evils of smoking and still lived to a considerable age, what is 'healthy'? Where would she and her ilk be today if the veterans had decided that they would not fight for our freedom because war is dangerous to their health? What, besides her own sense of self-im- portance, gives her the right to deprive veterans a space -- in their own building yet! -- where they can smoke if they please? Joan Robson 'doesn't want young women to have to deal with second hand smoke because she is her- self a cancer survivor. She must think young women are too stupid to make their own choices. The important question-is, who is forcing young women into places where there is a concentra- tion of cigarette smoke? Are they being threatened with bodily harm if they don't associate with smok- ers? There is sufficient information circulated to inform people of the dan- gers of smoking. If someone chooses to smoke anyway it is no one else's business. One could assume from the councillors' remarks that they consider their 'un- derlings' are all blind, deaf, illiterate, stupid and in need of protection from the 'en- lightened'. There have always been places in every town con- sidered dens of iniquity: pool halls, beverage rooms, bootleg joints. Those who disapproved stayed away but didn't deny their right. to exist. How did we get to the point where it is okay to say, "I don't like that, so stop it."? Canada is touted as a country with equal rights for all. To provide a little corner in every town for smokers would be one step in making it true. Until that happens we will continue to live with the hypocrisy of some being more equal than others. Shame on those who take it upon themselves to re- strict freedom of choice for the veterans who made that freedom possible.
