m= 12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MARCH NN, 2004 Council ponders heritage designation for old Barber paper mill on the Credit Town staff will report on a request from Heritage Halton Hills for a heritage designation for some buildings at the Barber Mill, anineteenth century paper making complex sitting vacant on the banks of the Credit River in Georgetown. At the last Council meeting, Mark Rowe, chairman of Heritage Halton Hills, detailed why the designation should be supported under the Ontario Heritage Act. He said the development is tied to restoration and the plans from owners, Everlast Restoration Inc., are "very sympathetic" to the 12-acre site that includes eight buildings, the oldest dating to 1864. Everlast has submitted zoning and Official Plan applications to -- allow development of unique commercial shops, an art galley, spa and a 230-unit condo development on the site. "The mill represents the paper-making industry that was instrumental in developing Georgetown," Rowe said, adding the project is eligible for 'TOWN DIGEST anew federal grant program to protect industrial buildings. In his report, Rowe said that neglect, squatters and weekend drinking parties have taken their toll on the property, along with a major fire last year that gutted one of the buildings. Twin city? Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette will write his counterpart, the Bergermeister, in Holten, Netherlands, to see if there is any interest in twinning the two municipalities. Last week, Council supported arequest from two Georgetown residents to investigate the twinning with Holten, where two former Halton Hills residents are buried, along with 1,900 other veterans. The idea of twinning, also known as mundialization, evolved after Japanese atomic bomb survivors resolved to make sure it could never happen again. Twinning fosters cultural and educational exchanges. Several councillors like the plan, - including Acton Councillor Mike O' Leary who said Remembrance Day television coverage makes it clear the Netherlands have never forgotten the sacrifices Canadian soldiers made liberating that part of Europe. "T think that this is a good way for us to keep the spirit alive and to remember the fact that so many of our young people...went to Europe and made the supreme sacrifice," O'Leary said. Georgetown Councillor Moya Johnson said she attended a Remembrance Day service at a Holten veterans' cemetery while on a trip to Holland with the Georgetown Children's Choir. "In wandering around that day, we came across a headstone of a young man from Acton -- no one knew who he was, no one knew his family name or anything, but it was really moving to just find that (grave)," Johnson said, supporting the initiative. Budget approved Georgetown Councillor Ron Chatten stood alone in his opposition to final approval of this year's budget and its 5.8 per cent tax hike for a property assessed at $250,000. . At Council last Tuesday, Chatten asked for a recorded vote, reiterating that a 5.8 per cent tax increase is too high, and asked for a budget debriefing, anda look at making the process more public. Mayor Rick Bonnette, who chaired the budget committee, said he'd accept responsibility for changing the system the Town uses to account for its spending and _ revenue, including ways to bring councillors into the process earlier. Bonnette said the $6.9- million capital budget will be spent on roads, parks, repairs and maintenance of facilities, with 2 per cent of the increase dedicated to the pavement management plan. continued on page 15 twinning in Samael tM elk oly ioe SUMERIA AND EGYPT, IS STILL Pag Cate) 082 1h eae ee Merl Mh alee AEMSNY Kids' Crossword © THE OPENING PER- FORMANCE OF IGOR STRAVINSKY'S BAL- LET, "THE RITE OF SPRING," CAUSES A RIOT IN PARIS. * RUSSIAN INVENTOR PLAYED and land THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO IN PLAYED Cig CLUES ACROSS 1, Music, for example 2. Only five Ducks headed east to better their times and grab some awards, rather than trying to place in the top three. Some of the 19 contending clubs had over 30 swimmers and the top three was not realistic. Jordan Dunn and Jennifer Kroezen charged out of the sky to claim three golds, three silvers and one bronze.
