THE NEW TANNER Rotarians fight Polio By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner The hot, loud, crowded real: ity of the Third World hit Acton's Amy Yateman like a blast as she, and a group of lo- cal Rotarians, walked outside the airport in New Delhi, India last month. Yateman, owner of Starlight Café on Mill Street, was a vol- unteer with Rotary's PolioPlus program that delivers life-sav- ing vaccine to impoverished countries. She was travelling with - Acton Rotarians Rob Charette and the Reverend Emrys Jenkins, and Charette's 19- year-old old son Jason, helping Rotary reach its goal of a po- lio-free world by 2005. "I was not prepared at all for the reality - the beggars and children lying all over the steps at the airport - but I adapted quickly because we were so accepted and welcomed wher- ever we went," Yateman said on Friday. When they weren't dispens- ing oral doses of polio vaccine from an eyedropper in rural vil- lages, Yateman said they toured the country, including a visit to s, the Taj Mahal, where there were "tons of tourists." Yateman, who describes her- selfs a friend to Acton Rotary Club members, several of whom are her regular custom- ers, was surprised how much their polio fighting efforts were appreciated.
