THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 2004 THE NEW TANNER 17 Mill Street reconstruction to be completed by June 30/04 By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner It will be a summer of pa- tience testing construction closures and congested traf- fic in downtown Acton as the Region replaces the wa- ter and wastewater mains under Mill Street, and the Town reconstructs the road, from Bower Avenue to Main Street. Details of the $1.9-mil- lion dollar project, slated to begin mid-April, were pro- vided to members of the Acton BIA (Business Im- provement Area) at its annual general meeting at the Legion last Wednesday. Halton design supervisor Brenda Kingsmill said con- struction would be staged so only one section of Mill Street is under construction at any one time. In those sections, traffic will be blocked off completely and parking will be removed. She said that communica- tion will be _ the "cornerstone" of the project and invited the BIA to at- tend bi-weekly construction meetings. Halton will pro- vide additional signage to give shoppers directions to open stores and ample park- ing. Kingsmill said they will provide the BIA with con- tact numbers for project officials and invited them to call with any and all ques- tions and comments. Rick Henry, the Town's newly promoted director of engineering and public works, detailed what the street would look like when the work was complete, in- cluding some downtown cosmetics, including col- oured concrete cross walks on side streets and sidewalk extensions, or bump outs, at key comers. Henry said removing parking on both sides of Mill Street from Main to Willow Street and on the north side from Willow to John Street would remove TP sete between 18 and 20 parking space, but the loss would be offset by the Town's new parking lot on Main Street North. BIA member Jake Kuiken, representing Halton Hills Furniture, asked why parking wasn't banned on both sides of Mill Street for two blocks, leading Henry to say that nothing was written in stone, and if the proposed parking bans didn't work, they could be easily changed. "Let's try it to see if it works and if there's no problem; then expand it," Henry said. The project includes re- placement of water mains on *Mill from Main to Bower Avenue 'John, Elgin and Frederick Street from Mill to Bower ¢Wilbur from Church to Bower. The sanitary sewer will be replaced on: *Mill from John to Elgin and Wilbur to Bower *Elgin and Frederick from Mill to Bower ¢Wilbur from Church to Bower. *Storm sewers will be re- placed on: *Mill from Elgin easterly, and Wilbur to Fellow «John at Bower Mill Street construction is slated to be complete by the end of June and the total work should be done a month later.
